I was just looking thru my files to help another forum member on Trackers when I came across this for mine!!!
"With manual hubs only; after 200 miles, operate engine one minute with manual transmission in second, automatic transmission in drive."
Yikes! I have been leaving the auto in park, and just reaching in to start it.
I guess we will be the poster child that you CAN tow a Tracker 2,000 miles without starting it in the 'proper gear' and still have a trans left over. If that truely is mandatory I'd have to take out the brake buddy each time, to put it in drive every 200 miles.
What do all you do with Trackers for the start up?

I just push the clutch in start the engine and then let the clutch out, I keep the transmission in 4th gear when towing it, I let it run while I am filling the MH. I trhn reach in turn the engine off and I am on my way.
I rebuilt the transmission at 150,000 miles, it had a bearing failure
on the rear output shaft that was not related too towing it. These transmissions are well built and if the fluid level is kept at the full capacity they really don't need the 200 mile routine. I do it everytime I stop for fuel, about 300 miles. Make sure you use the proper lube oil per the owners manual. They require a gear oil with a GL-5 rating, about $25 a quart and not easily found. Most Chrysler/Dodge dealers have it. My local GM/Suzuki dealer could not even get it for me ????.

I would think that you could just reach in and push the button on the Brake Buddy and then reach in and shift the trans into drive while the brake petal is pushed. Just make sure that the emergency brake is on. And more importantly, make sure that you release the emergency brake after putting the trans back in park.

The owner's manual for our '92 Tracker said auto trans in Park, manual trans in 2nd gear, transfer case in neutral, key in accessory position, and start every 200 miles and run for a minute or two.

Our 2000 Tracker said that we were to place the transfer case in neutral, run the vehicle in forward and reverse for two minutes and then put the transmission in Park. I had the maunual hubs added when we first bought it and still followed the users manual instructions as explained.
Our current XL7 follows the same procedure. We have the automatic hubs.
