I would like to hear from Align-A-site users who are aiming a Direct TV HD slimline satellite dish . Do you level the tripod or do you stabilize the tripod (not necessarily level) and then make the adjustments on the dish to obtain the signal? Thanks Jim

I dont have Align a Site but have manually set up my Slimline on a Bullseye mount for the past 8 months...I would think that unless your tripod/mast are level and plumb AND stable, you will need alot of gross dish adjustments just to get to the fine tune stage..and with the weight of the dish, alot of gross adjustments could cause your tripod to lose its plumb...

IF you owned an Align-a-site you would realize your assumption is totally wrong.

After correctly installing the Align-a-site on your dish, you do not need to level or plumb the mast or tripod. Simply put it on the ground stake it down and then use the align-a-site's level to get your angles. After doing that I find I only need very minor adjustments to fine tune the signal.

Creeper, are you doing this with a SlimLine or just the normal 18 inch oval?

If you have to ask why I drive a Diesel, then you will never understand.

I have tha Align-A-Site that I use with the Slimline 5. I can get close but still use a signal meter to fine tune. The way I originally set up the A-A-S was to get the best possible signal and then set the tilt and elevations to the recommended readings. After this I mounted the A-A-S unit on my dish with the bubbles level. After diong so I found that the azimuth was not exactly correct so I made my own mark.

It is true that you don't have to have a level tripod setup but the tilt on the Slimline is so hard to change (location of bolts and nuts) that you really don't want to do it if you don't have to.

Look for a smaller Slimline 3 to come on the market soon. There are already people who are retrofitting the 3LNB's (99/101/103) onto the old Phase III dishes and having some success. Most people will not need the 110 and 119 satellites for future programming except for Spaninh channels.

I'm doing it with the larger oval Dish 1000. The touch part with the align-a-site is the intial set up and installation of the unit. I did this in my drive way. After that it's a breeze.
