I recently bought a new laptop with Win Vista. Is there a way to transfer Excel docs from older (win XP) to new computer with out being forced to buy the preloaded newer version of Excel ?
I took the hard drive out of the old unit and am using it for external storage, but when I try to bring up Excel docs, they only come up in the newer Excel 2007.Is there a simple way to get out of paying MS the $ and still use the older version of Excel HELP Thanks

First, uninstall the "new" Excel (or even the whole of the "new" MS Office 2007. Then, install your paid-for older version from the original CD.
OR - download and install one of the free office suites (like openoffice.org), which ought to be able to load and save the spreadsheets.
I'm pretty sure the older versions of MS Office will install on Vista - given that office 2007 didn't come out until a year or so after Vista.

I have Vista but I added Office 2007 (with Excel). Typically, Microsoft programs will open older versions of the same program. They won't always save it in that older version, however. You'd probably have to save it in the newer version.
When you open Excel, look for the tab that gives you a choice of extensions. Or you could double-click on the program file name and see if it opens in Excel.

I'm a little confused by your problem here, so I'll point out a couple things:
1 - Excel 2007 will open, edit, save, etc any document supported by the older Excels. *.xls was the old standard and is fully supported. You can even create new files and save them as *.xls.
2 - Office 2007 has a new XML based format for all of their files, so now you have *.docx, *.xlsx, etc. HOWEVER, MS provides a free update to Office 2003 that adds support for these documents.
3 - If you have a DEMO copy of Office 2007 on your computer you should uninstall it and use your CD's from the version you have. It will run fine on Vista.

So,it seems like I could install my old copy of MS Office 2000,that includes Excel, after I uninstall the Demo MS Office that is on the computer now.Am I correct / As you can probably tell I am not even "semi" computer literate.
Thanks for the help
