I have noticed something about our 2 year old Border Collie Diesel. There have been a few times, I saw it twice on Saturday that his mouth starts to chatter open & closes a few times real fast. Has anyone ever noticed their dog's doing thid & is this something I should talk to the vet about?

Sounds liks the pet is nervous about something.

Sometimes it can be a sign of pain, sometimes a neurological problem, sometimes nothing. Without any other signs, mention it the next time you go to your vet. If you do notice other signs, make the appt sooner.

Our GSD did that when we tried a new medicine. Changed meds and no trouble. Did you change food or medicine or anything recently?

They will do it if they lick something strange. My Boston will do the same thing if he licks the carpet. See if he does something like that when you notice it.

Sister-in-law's border collie chatters her teeth a lot. She also snaps her teeth a lot. She is not being aggressive, just seems to be part of her nature. She's also a barking control freak - just border collie nature. Also smart as any dog can be and valuable on the farm.

I've seen Border Collies do this when they are very excited.
I've seen males do this when after checking out a female.
My Jody (female) does this after checking out another female that is in heat.
As stated above, I've seen our Border Collies do this after tasting some things (example: cleaning anal glands).

He didn't lick anything & he's not on any meds or change of food. Diesel was relaxed so maybe it is just something he does. Thanks for all the advice.

Both my Cairns do/did that--kind of a shiver around the mouth especially when first laying down and relaxing. At first I thought it was a sign of nervousness but now believe it is the opposite--kind of a muscle release mechanism.
Not a problem with us--just a unique trait.
