We are filling out the application to be a volunteer MN State Park Campground Host in 2009. These seem to be popular positions in MN.

Any & all advise on how to get selected is appreciated.

They want folks who present themselves well and deal well with the public. In the application, where they want you to cover your experience, hit on those experiences you have had which would require the above attributes. Also, prepare a resume and include it. Again, hit on those aspects I have mentioned. Around 3 weeks after submitting the application and resume, call them to assure they received your paperwork and if they start asking questions and want some discussion, consider this to be a job interview and present your answers as such. Good luck, you will enjoy it.

Do mention any past experience working with the public, even as a volunteer. If you have been a leader for a kids group, officer of some service club, or any other type of volunteer position, be sure to list it. These are not technical positions requiring great skill but mostly positions that need a smiling face and a friendly greeting. Anything which shows that you like people and enjoy meeting new folks is helpful.

Some parks also want people who have experience operating lawn care equipment, but other states do not. I would look closely at the job description and emphasize anything you have done in the past that would include parts of what they seek.

This is to be a volunteer position, so all volunteer experience from the past is worth a mention.
