54 to 71 to 540 to 540/71 to 71 to 59 @ Texarkana to I10 to Sam Houston Pkwy (toll road) @ Houston to 59 to 77 @ Victoria to 83. We do the I10 to 83 drive every year. Depending upon where in the RGV you are going - we go to Donna - we get on 186 @ Raymond then south on 493. A bit shorter and avoids 83 around Harlingen.

See ya' down the road!

If I am just trying to get from point A to point B in the quickest, easiest manner without considering sightseeing, I just stay on the interstates or other primary highways without traffic lights. I would go I-44 to OKC, then I-35 south, using I-35W thru Fort Worth (bypassing Dallas). I-35W thru Ft Worth is not bad at all except during morning and afternoon rush hours.

From Texarkana it is better to take US 59 to Carthage then US 79 to Rockdale then US 77 to Victoria then 77 to Riviera turn left at stoplight on 285 to Falfurrias then US 281 to McAllen then to your destination. This way you will miss Houston and the road work on US 83 around Weslaco. Good roads with small towns. Better scenery and restaurants.
Have a great trip.

Easy and best don't mix when it comes to getting around or thru North Texas and especially the DFW area.

With the traffic situation as it is in the DFW area, Austin/Roundrock along I-35 and then add Houston, I'd personally use the TXK US59 to US79 to Rockdale, then US 77 to Victoria. From Victoria stay on US77 down to either Robstown or Alice, then cut over to US281, down to McAllen. Cutting over to US281 elmiinates a lot of traffic along US83 between McAllen and Brownsville/So. Padre island.

Easiest way to do this is to go down to Joplin the I-540/US71 south toward TXK.

If you do decide to take I-44 to OKC, then I'd stay on I-44 south, down to Wichita Falls, (TX) then US281 south, all the way to RGV. US281 is an excellent road with a lot of truck lanes in the hill country and several long stretches of 4-lane.

I-35 is is the NAFTA express, in both directions, to and from Canada to Mexico. Traffic in the Austin/Roundrock gets bogged down for no reason other than just too many trucks and cars.

Whatever you do, do not choose going through Houston over going through Dallas. That will add 100 miles to your journey plus the cost of the toll road. I would do I-44 to US-69 to US-75 to I-35E. In Waco, take US-77. In Victoria pick up US-59 to George West, then US-281 to US-83. Dallas is much easier then Houston.

I would have to agree with grey eagle, US281 out of Wichita Falls is a good road, and there is no good time to travel I35W or I35E. If you
really need to go I35 make sure you are well south of the DFW area before you get on it.JMHO
