Help! I have acquired a 30 year old travel trailer (Monitor) and cannot get the roof to stop leaking in various places. It have the aluminized coating on it now which just doesn't seem to help when re-applied. How do you fix these old roofs? Should I resort to something like roofing tar?

Thanks for any advice.

Did you consider putting a rubber roof over it like the newer trailers come with. Expensive but good.

I recently purchased an older trailer with the aluminum roof also and have used this method on all the RVs I had (older) through the years.

First, I scrape all the old sealant, etc. off the seams, from around vents, etc. Then wash it all very well and dry it. Then I take my electric drill with a wire brush on it to completely clean the aluminum down to the original shine. Then wash it again and dry it with the air compressor to ensure no water or debris is"sealed" in after applying the final sealant. I use Dicor self leveling sealant (in the tube) to fill in any larger areas Finally, 2 days later after all is completely dry I finish off by doing 2 coats on the entire roof with Kool Seal Elastimeric roof coating. It fills in all the small areas, cracks, etc., is pliable, and the bright white color helps reflect the hot sun. It's a lot of work, but I feel it's worth it in the end. I call it the poor mans rubber roof! Good luck!

If you get it back to metal Eternabond tape comes in aluminum finish as well.
