A friend's son was hurt in a DUI, a couple of years ago. After he was released from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with multiple charges, including DUI. She whines about what his injuries might cause in the future, i.e. hip replacement, etc., poor baby. I cannot bring myself the sympathize with her. Is this awful? Some friend, huh?

I don't think you are mean, but I reckon everyone oughta get one mistake forgiven.

Nothing wrong with how you feel, but I'm wondering why you call her a "friend."

I would agree with you.
Regardless of how it happened, your friend is simply sharing her concerns about her son.

Let me see if I understand you correctly.. You said he was hurt in a DUI, Implied is that it was an accident or crash.
And I gather he was the driver who was UI.
If so, Then my position is "He brought it upon himself and any ills he suffers are simply the wages of his own sin"
In short. I have no problem with you.
I know alcoholism is a disease.. It is one I'll never have (Can't stand the taste of the ... (impolite term meaning Liquid waste product goes here)...
But I still feel that the person brings it upon themselves when they take the 1st drink.. If you have a problem, (If you've ever drunk yourself stupid) you have no business taking that FIRST drink. They don't call Drunk "Stupid" for nothing.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

His 2nd DUI. I have known her for 20 years and I love her, so I consider her a friend; I just don't understand the way she feels. My son had an accident, his fault, no DUI, though, and I didn't baby him. I have been told I am "hard."

As a juror on an injury suit, I listened to MD's from Stanford testifying as expert witnesses. The gist was that severe injuries often cause problems forever. Your friend may know this. We didn't award any money. We felt that in that case, stupid did indeed hurt.

There's something about being a young adult male that makes it the number one indicator for death and injury. Dispite what they do to themselves, their mothers still worry about them. Always have, always will.
