We do not subscribe to the paper, but rather choose to read it online each day. You can post comments after stories, much like what we do on these forums. Only, the comments can be a lot more ugly and names are thrown around, unlike what we post here. Today there is an article about a local minister resigning from one of our larger churches. There was a story 6 months ago concerning the same church and minister. He resigned under pressure then, but was persuaded to come back. Well, there are 24 pages of comments tonight on today's article! I have never read so many mean, back biting comments. This is by no means an unusual thing. In fact, whoever moderates the posts for the paper let a lot of trashy comments get by. I thought that some of our posters here are pretty harsh sometimes, but they are angels compared to the posters on the newspaper.

We do get the paper, but I also go to the online edition. Our comments often are the same as you describe. This forum is heavily moderated. Other sites are not.

Which is a good thing. If this site became unmoderated it wouldn't take long for this site to resemble one of the other unmoderated sites. Basically a food fight without the food.
I prefer a modicum of civility whilst ingesting varied opinions on widely dispersed subjects; so to speak.
And complaining about the poofing doesn't work. I have been poofed almost as much as Mandrake. I know, hard to believe. He is my idol. As hard as I try I still make bad posts; I get poofed. Big deal. I can actually make it through the day without therapy.

Our local paper has the same thing. I'm really surprised that they don't moderate the comments posted on the website a little better as there is some liability there. The libel and slander laws are still on the books and they apply to Internet postings. For example, our local paper posted a video from a robbery on their web page. A bunch of people posted comments saying that they thought the business employee that was robbed was in on the robbery because it didn't look like he reacted enough to the knife welding robber. This guy is the victim of a robbery and there are people posting that he was in on it which means they are accusing him on committing a felony. That is straight up libelous conduct and he can sue and probably collect from anybody who posted a note. I would think he may even be able to sue the newspaper for not moderating the content better and taking the notes down.

Houston hasn't had a local newspaper since the Post folded...
So, no. I do not read a local newspaper, on line or off line.

The day isn't complete without the morning paper (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) and coffee. On the weekends we do the AJC and the NY Times over coffee and breakfast.

No online paper. DW reads the local delivered paper.
For me, the local paper has too much stuff I'm not interested in reading.
If my name is in the obits then I will read it.
