I need to pickup a Ford F150 that is out of state. I am going to take my A out to Arkansas and pull the pickup back with a dolly. The question is, once I drop the rear driveshaft can I still move the veh. with the front wheel drive in 4 wheel drive? Old Fords would pull with the front when they lost the rear driveshaft in the old days. Is it still the same. Thanks

Don't see why not, I drove a 4x4 Bronco for a week without the rear driveshaft, it had terrible torque steer, but I had to get to work.

As long as it isn't full time four wheel drive, it should work fine.
However, if you completely remove the shaft, will oil leak out of the transfer case? If the slip joint comes out of the transfer case, it will probably leak. If there is a yoke on the transfer case that stays there when you remove the shaft, you will probably be ok.

Can you not just put the transfer case in neutral, thats how I flat tow my new Jeep. Put transfer case in nuetral and transmission back in gear or park. As to your question, yes you can move or drive the PU without the rear shaft in 4wd.

You will note that he plans to tow the truck on a dolly (possibly a rental) rather than going to the expense of buying a towbar and associated gear. Quite often, the Owner's Manual for 4X4 vehicles expressly FORBIDS dolly towing unless the rear driveshaft is removed.
The OP could, of course, rent a car trailer for about 3 or 4 times what a dolly would cost!

If you could just put the transfer case in neutral to flat tow, couldn't you also just put it in neutral to tow on a dolly? DUH

Well, yes, I suppose you COULD do that, IF you believe that the people who wrote the Owner's Manual did not know what they were talking about when they tell you DON'T DO THAT!
DOUBLE DUH, THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY DON'T!!
At least they did on every 4X4 I have ever owned. Maybe an F150 is different.

I tow my ford f150 4x4 all 4 down. I drop the shaft , but truck in 4h and key to Aux (nopower). To answer your question. I have driven my truck with drive shaft removed for a short distance just for hooking it up. I also recommend that when you drop your drive shaft to either buy a plug (harbour Frieght) for tranny to keep fluids from leaking or go to junk yard and get a broken yoke and use it as a plug.
if once you dont suuuceedd

If once you dont' succedd
