Our home crockpot must be 20 years old. We just bought a new crockpot (120v) for camping - the new kind with the removable pot. I was amazed at the high temperature of the outside of the crockpot. It seems that the sides of the pot have almost no insulation. I would think that they should insulate the sides so the heat goes in and not out, it would probably enable them to use a smaller heating element so could use less electricity.
Is anyone else concerned about this? Have you found a crockpot that has insulation in the sides?
Thanks in advance..

Yes and no. We've found both. A lot has to do with the temperature the factory sets the crock pot thermostat to. Lately we've found a lot more have a higher temperature even on low settings. I'm guessing some companies have had lawsuit issues over not high enough temps to control the growth of bacteria and have raise the temps, but not re engineered the insulation/spacing for the higher temps.

The old crock pots were called slow cookers but the newer versions cook at a very hot temp. in order to prevent bacteria.

When we have potluck events at work, I'm always amazed at the variety of crock pots that show up. Personally, I can't stand the ones with plastic lids. I envision what heat there is escaping out the top.
