The little Honda Fit has received very good reviews from the pros as well as consumers and I understand it can be towed four down. My concern is that it may not be as able as the CRV to take the punishment of towing on questionable roads.
The other smaller alternatives are the Saturn VUE, Jeep products or the Ford Ranger and Chevy Coloardo 4x4 with automatics. Oddly Nissan Frontier and Toyota don't allow 4 down towing with auto even though they have a transfer case.
So, how is the Fit holding up for those who own them? Is the CRV that good? What other lighter weight autos are good as a dinghy.

My Honda Element tows nice and is rugged. It's a roomy workhorse as an everyday small SUV...but you'd have to get a used 03 to 05.
Per Honda, the newer ones don't tow 4D even though the drive train is CRV.

The Motorhome Mag 2008 Dingy Tow Guide says it's still OK.

I own a 2009 Honda Fit Sport. If Roadmaster ever ships the bracket I will be leaving for Arizona for the rest of the winter. I love the car and the only concern I have is the low clearance of 6". So far I have not experiences any problems with driveways etc. Good luck.

Yes the CR-V is that great. Tows easy and you have a nice flexible vehicle when you get there. I also tow a chevy silverado and while I like it, I cringe when I watch the front wheels on the pickup during tight turns. The CR-V seems to follow quite a bit better.

Yes, I'm sure. I was still referring to the 06 and newer Elements that have the CRV drive train as not tow approved.

I was considering a 2009 Honda Fit, but decided to get a year end 2008 CRV EL-L instead. While the Fit would have worked, the tow bar setups have been a bit slow coming, but the bigger issue for me is that we keep our MH off site and often throw all of our stuff in the toad (used to have a truck and 5er to do this with) and load up the MH at the storage lot and take off. Reverse when we return. With a smaller toad, I don't think we'd be able to get enough stuff in the toad to do this. The CRV is a great car in addition to being a great toad. I got the EX Leather which has XM radio, heated leather seats, and dual automatic climat control. All nice stuff to have. Milage has been around 25 MPG, mostly light city driving.

The amazing fact is that the 2009 Honda Fit has as much storage room as some small suv's, 59 cf with the rear seats down. The cc of 850 lbs is the same as the CRV. Mileage has been around 38 mpg, 50/50 mix city/hwy. Notified by Roadmaster that they finally shipped the bracket yesterday. I may get to San Diego by Christmas yet!
