I have been trying to set up my direct tv at my travel traler at the deer lease for the past two years. This year Direct TV updated all of my receivers at home to new HD;s. I bought a brand new slim line 5 dish and carried this and one of my receivers to the lease. I have spent many hours on this and have not got reception yet. We have got as close to having 98% signal strength on sat.101 and 86% on sat 110. Each shows about 3 transponders. Can anyone tell me if Direct TV had to send a hit to the Dish each time you travel to a different spot? I hear of folks traveling that go and put their tripod out ,aim the dish and have TV . Can any of you folks offer any help. Thanks

I assume you're using the coordinates SPECIFIC to your location (at the trailer, not at home) and using the aiming instructions for that zip code. I assume also that you're using the HD dish and HD receiver at the trailer. Also you'll need to make certain that you have a direct pathway from the dish to the receiver (one that does NOT go through the antennae amplifier). Using the "cable" port won't work.
Good luck / skip

First do you have a clear shot of the sky? I mean not one twig in the way.
Setting up a HD dish can be a bit tricky. Have you set the tilt? Are you level?

If you are only receiving 3 transponders on the 101, you have a problem. If the receiver works at home, I would suspect the LNB/multiswitch on the dish. I belive that there currently about 28 transponders active on the 101.
Also, you may need to reset the receiver after the dish is aligned.
Does either dish have a SWM?

High Def satellite setup
99 101 103 110 119
KA is 101 and 103 18-20 ghz original satellites
KU is 99 110 119
1. Peak on 101 right and left with meter (or tv). Lock the mounting bolts on the support mast.
2. Adjust elevation screw for maximum signal.
Write this measurement down for reference ( )
3. Now on satellite 119 tilt the dish for maximum signal. Might have to use receiver and not the meter.
4. Fine tune the elevation on satellite 101
Set plastic dial to ( 0 ).
Go two turns (CCW) and record the level ( )
Turn CW until the same level is measured and write that down ( )
Divide the number of turns by two and then turn CCW that amount.
Tighten the elevation lock down bolts.
5. Fine tune azimuth looking at satellite 101
Your signal strength should be equal or better than the initial level measured but in no case should it be
lower.
Lock down all adjustments.
As mentioned if you have a SWM dish you might not know you need a power inserter box. Your HD receiver probably will work with either type of dish but a SWM dish must have the power inserter.
Check out SolidSignal.com and look for the SWM dish. Go to the bottom of the page and there are a couple of excellent videos. There used to be 5 videos on how to align the 5 lnb dish but I can't seem to find them at the site any longer. I have saved them and probably could e-mail them if needed.

It's a struggle to get a decent signal anywhere, and there's no guarantee it will stay decent. I can get MOST xponders, but lately xponder 15 on Sat A (regular programming) will be 0, sometimes 50. Same with xponder 2 and one other. That's the best I can do. It didn't used to be this way.
I've replaced the outdoor cable, the dish, the cable from the wall nipple to the receiver. The only things left are the nipple and the receiver.

Are you using a direct connection of coax from your LNB/Switch to the receiver or are you using the pre-installed TV coax on the RV? If you are using the RV coax, try a direct cable instead.

We have HD directv at our home, but I still run our old system in our RV. In the RV, we use a convertor box for HD on the local stations.
We move a lot when we travel and I can't see spending all that time setting up a 3lnb satellite dish.

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Make sure you have the small transformer that connects to the back of the receiver. Without that transformer you can get 101 but not HD. If you have your post good and level and your tilt and elevations set per directions for your area you only need to adjust directions per compass. That should get you close enough to where you can start fine tuning using the TV. I have found that Direct TV tilt, elevations, and azimuth sometimes are a little off. Find 101 and fine tune from there. Hope this helps
