I'd appreciate all the patience it will take you kind souls to help me out. DW and I want to vanture a little ways into Mexico. Will leave from Yuma, AZ. Don't want to go too far at first. Need suggestions on:

Destination
Route
Campground (what facilities, power, water, sewer, etc)
Average cost of campground (do they have monthly rentals?)

As you can see, we know NOTHING

Thanks for your time

I will leave the answers regarding route, places, RV parks, etc. to those who have favorite places. My two comments are DO IT, Mexico is a great place, especially when you get away from the border, and second, stay out of the mountains, it is winter down there and can be cold. For first timer might want to consider Bahia Kino or Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point).

The way you doing it, it is quite bright. Poke in, get the feel, the ways, the funk and if it is for you, go further. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Good luck.

We visited Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) two years ago for a week, but we traveled with a group as part of a tour package sponsored by our Motorhome Club. I would definitely recommend to anyone that they go with a tour group on their first trip down. After that, you'll have enough experience to plan your own trip.

I thought prices were a little higher than I thought they should have been, although not outrageous. Friends who were just down to Rocky Point found the RV parks almost empty. That could be due to the economy rather than how visitors are treated.

^^^ Good suggestion. Rocky Point is not quite 'Mexico', being such a US tourist little mecca, but has a little of everything, and superbly suited for the first-time visitor. True, prices are indeed very 'Americano'.

Having just returned from Mazatlan, the trip was great, the weather perfect and the people fantastic. You have tolls on the major highways but fuel is cheaper so the cost per mile is about the same. RV parks seem to range between $400 to $500.00 US per month, some included power and some the power was metered. One word of caution, when fuelling up you pay the attendant at the pump and some of them are very good at switching a 500 peso bill for a 50 peso bill and then demanding that you only gave them a 50 peso. This is not something new, they have been doing it for years. This time of year the weather is starting to warm up so Kino Bay and other places in the northern part should be OK but they are not my choices, mainly because of the weather. Do a search and a lot has been written on this forum about Mexico. You will also find a lot of nay sayers from people that have never been to Mexico and have no clue other than rumours from a friends friend etc. Try it and I am sure you will love it. The people are very friendly and helpful, even to us that don't speak spanish. Enjoy your trip.

From Yuma. go south on 95 to San Luis and cross the border. No paper work required for any stay of 3 days or less and any stay less than a week equates to 3 days, by most people, otherwise you will need an FMT(visa) for Mexico. Follow the signs for El Golfo, which is on the coast, but not a good destination. The toll road is a very good highway and the cost is 98p. When you get a couple of Kilometers from El Golfo, take the road to your left to Puerto Penasco(Rocky Point), it is a brand new highway and very good. When you come to the traffic circle at the end of the road turn right for Rocky Point. At the 1st traffic light after turning at the traffic circle, turn right and follow the road about 4 miles to The Reef RV Park. The last 1/2 mile will be on a very good sand road and you will turn left at the stop sign when you see the RVs on your left. You will meet several folks from the net there and I'm sure they will be glad to show you around.

You MUST have Mexican insurance on your car and you can either buy online as most of us do, or buy from an agent in San Luis before crossing. Go and enjoy your trip and the new to you culture, which is all together different from what you see along the border..

Always tip the attendant 20 Peso's. If enough gringo's do this it will probably make them less apt to rip off. They really appreciate it, and it helps them view us in a better light.

Don't agree! If you have a bad Pemex attendant, report him. The Pemex attendant job is one of the better paid jobs in Mexico. I give 10 pesos on a fill up of 90 gals if service has been good and I ALWAYS get a receipt (called a ticket in Mexico). Nothing if they were a pain in the 0ss.

First time and you are in Yuma, AZ., "ROCKY POINT" also known as Puerto Penasco.

I10 East to Gila Bend, AZ., South on Hwy 85 to AZ/Mexico Border, cross border continue on to Mex 2, East on Mex 2 one block and turn South to Rocky Point (there are signs to Rocky Point/Puerto Penasco once your cross the border).

Any of the campgrounds in RP is fine. Reef if you want more room and you have toys. The rest if you enjoy the close together feeling.

Do a search for Rocky Point RV on Google and you will get close to current rates.

Fill your water tank before you leave and learn to manage water.

Mexican Insurance is a MUST!

You will enjoy. Pay for only a week at a time at first in case it isn't your cup of tea.
