RE: Just need to be legal....

First thing I would do is that the trailer to a scale and find out what thge real tongue weight is. Weigh the truck by itself, then go back to the scale with the trailer. Weight the truck again with the trailer attached, subtract the weight of the truck by itself and that will give you the tongue weight. Also weigh the trailer axles, then you can add tongie weight to that and get total trailer weight. Important to weight the trailer as you normally load it for travel, especially if you carry water etc., to get accurate readings. Once you have the weights, you won't have to guess as to the WD bar size you need.

RE: Towed it home, scared to death!

Man, there is so much misinformation, posturing, and pure BS in this thread, I don't know where to start, and I don't have the time even if I had the desire... OP: do yourself a favor and get a sway control.

RE: Vortex Fan Install - UPDATE, WALL SWITCH ADDED - PICS

Nice job, well done. Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks as if you used a lampcord wire for the new switch. If this is so, this does not meet the insulation requirement for RV electrical certification. Alex Lamp cord does not meet the NEC for inwall use on 120V, but it should certainly meet code for 12v use at that low amperage. The general lighting circuit that feeds that fan is probably fused at 10A. It certainly looks like th lamp cord has thicker insulation than the stranded wire the OEMs use, can you tell us what the requirements are and why lamp cord falls short?

RE: Fantastic Fans?

Typically the ceiling has insulation in it. Depending on the distance to the light, use a coat hanger or fishtape.

RE: Tire Noise Revisited, More Info

I'm thinking maybe have them all re-balanced, any anomolies should show up in that process.

RE: Brake Controller: Difference in GM Wiring from 2000 to 2003?

Yes, I believe the change was made in 2003. The connector is exactly the same, but the pin connections are different so they are not compatible. You can get another harness adapter, or if you do a search here on the forum, somebody mapped the pin differences, and you just need to re-do the connections from the connector to the brake controller. 2003 was a big upgrade year for this series, the mirrors changed, radio changed, OnStar went digital, the DIC and steering wheel audio controls were available, among other stuff.

RE: Honda Pilot Tow Vehicle questions

A good transmission shop should be able to install a transmission cooler for your Pilot for a few hundred $$. I would suggest a transmission temp gauge as well. Check your owner's manual to see if there are any limitations or qualifications with that 3500 lb tow rating. Most domestic pickups and SUVs base their tow rating on a single 150-lb driver, so that anything else that you load in the vehicle subtracts directly from the tow rating, and that makes the tow rating misleading in that regard. If that's true with your case, consider how much gear you plan to load into the Pilot. Many vehicle are available with several drivetrain considerations. Check teh owner's manual to be sure that you have the correct engine and gearing for the 3500 lb tow rating. If you have a smaller engine or different gearing, your tow rating may be less. Since it's a pop-up trailer that you are considering, you won't have wind resistance issues like you would on a hard-sided or hybrid trailer. Frontal area of the trailer is also a common limitation to the tow ratings on smaller vehicles like yours', but as I said, shouldn't be an issue based on the trailer you are considering. Offhand, it sounds like the Pilot will be working hard towing that load, but you are likely OK with it assuming the above points check out in your favor. You will also need to have the Pilot wired for an electric brake controller, since most states require trailer brakes on trailers over 1000 lbs.

RE: What's on my TT roof? (vent question)

Not just for propane operation. The fridge relies on a "chimney" effect where it draws air in from the side vent and exhausts through the roof. This airflow is an important process of the cooling cycle using an ammonia-type system, whether operating on gas or ammonia. In fact, some RVers have added fans inside the air chase to promote circulation in veryt hot climates where natural convection doesn't work very well. Here's how the fridge works: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y134/Burbman/2008%20Terry/RVFridgeDiagram.jpg width=640 Look at item #8 in the diagram, also explains why the fridge won't work well or at all if operated too far off of level.

RE: Tire Noise Revisited, More Info

Forgot to mention that the tires are Bridgestone Revos, 3yrs old with 25,000 miles on them. Rotated about 5,000 miles ago. This is my second set of 265 tires since I went to 16x8 rims back in 2004. The spare is the OEM 245, which makes it 9 yrs old... Looking back to my first set of 265's, ProComp AT's, they only lasted about 3 yrs and 30,000 miles, and I finally replaced them because I couldn't balance them anymore. When they came off the rim, they all showed varying degrees of belt separation from the inside. QUESTION: I'm wondering if airing to 15psi a couple times a year on the beach is shortening the lifespan of the tires? The tread on the Revo's is only half gone, seems a shame to swap them out.

RE: Fantastic Fans?

I just ordered my Fantastic Fan from RV Vent and they were very helpful. I looked at the Turbo Maxx, but I don't have the clearance to the rear of where I was installing the vent. The Turbo Maxx design is 23" long and takes up roof real estate to the rear of the actual vent opening. The Fantastic Fan works with a standard vent cover. RV Vent customizes each order for you: 1) Dome type can be either flat if using under a vent cover or domed. 2) Dome color can be opaque, translucent or transparent, or smoked. 3) Interior trim depth can be matched to your roof thickness for "no trim" installation 4) Fan base can be hi- or lo- profile 5) Interior trim can be white or off-white. These options are in addition to the fan model itself. I am cutting a new hole in the roof for a bedroom vent fan, and opted for the top of the line 6600R with rain sensor and remote control. Has 14 fan speeds, intake/exhaust, and the best is the lowest amp draw, only 0.2-1.9 amps depending on fan speed.

RE: 2010 GMC Sierra 2500HD Where in the World is Jasmar's

Makes sense, they don't have passenger air bag disable functions in sedans or SUVs. The extended cab isn't really big enough to put a child seat in the back, so it likely goes up front. With a crew cab, you can put the kid in the back seat, and the General gets to save $1.47 per vehicle by not having to provide a passenger airbag diasbale mechanism. Makes perfect sense to me...

Tire Noise Revisited, More Info

Had the chance to put more miles on the truck (01 Suburban 2500 4WD) and try to zero in on the tire noise. I've been able to duplicate the noise on several road surfaces at this point, and with DW riding shotgun, I'm pretty sure the noise is coming from the front. When starting out cold, and accelerating up to 50-ish, a thumping noise starts to get louder. I asked DW if she heard the noise, and she says, "Hear it? I can feel it in my feet, it feels like somebody pounding the underside of the floorboards!" I didn't feel it on the drivers side and didn't have any shimmy in the wheel or pulling to the side. Accelerated up to 70 and the thumping noise got louder, then...went away. I've been able to duplicate this 3 different times on 3 different roads. Almost reminds me of the flat spots that the old nylon-corded tires used to get, but then rounded out after they heated up. Have not rotated the tires yet, that will be next. Any ideas on this? I guess I'm assuming it's tire noise, could it be a front wheel bearing? This was in 2WD, so I'm ruling out front drivetrain like transfer case and CV joints.

RE: Yes or No Answer Needed...

I don't know if I would buy a 10 year old truck that was driven so little...seals dry out and leak etc. I'd be more comfortable if it had 108,000 on the odo.

RE: Vortex Fan Install - UPDATE, WALL SWITCH ADDED - PICS

Just made the same change to our bath fan last night. The fan is much more efficient, but not any quieter. Which is OK, sometimes you need a little noise cover to mask, um, certain, uh, other noises.... Switch is a nice touch.
