RE: Replace ducted Air conditioner

Ditto on installation is not rocket science but getting it on the roof can be a pain. I did it by bulding a sort of sled out of some scrap wood and pulling it up a heavy duty extension ladder I had full extended. Fully extedned it acted a bit lik a ramp. I had tied a rope to the sled so I could pull it up to the roof. I had my neighbor pushing which helped a lot. Good luck.

RE: Any generaton mechanics out there ?

Nope. You have to get to the thing. I did a major tune-up a couple of years ago and had to drop mine to get to the points and the rear spark plug. I was able to slowly lower the front with an old car jack after removing the front frame bolts completely and loosening the back bolts a couple of turns. I set the front of the frame on a cinder block or something stable to keep it from swinging too far down.
Is yours mounted like that or is the bottom of the compartment completely sealed? If it is in a sealed compartment (meaning you'll have to bring it out the door), may God have mercy on your soul (unless it is on a slide out tray).
Good luck.

Ford 6.0 PSD alternator swap, that was easy

2005 F-250 with 6.0 turbo PSD. Voltage regulator went bad on replacement alternator less than one year old. First time replacing was a pain as I hd no time to research the easy way to do it. This time, I posted here and Googled for info.
Found out about the catch latch on the belt tensioner and how removing the fan guard made it easy to get to everything.
Popped the fan guard off with a little help from a flat blade screwdriver on the clips. Had to use a flashlight to see down in and figure out where the idler arm was. About then, neighbor wandered over to see what was up, He pulled on the belt to release tension on the belt tensioner while I reached down and flipped the catch into place.
Belt slipped right off the alternor pulley. Five minutes later, faulty alternator was off. Replacement alternator went on just as easy. Slipped the belt onto the alternator pulley, gave the belt a bit of a tug, the catch latch released and the belt was tight. Too easy.
Voltage fluctation seems resolved as well. Old alternator would jump up and down a volt, about 13.8 to 14.8. New one was steady to .02 volts somewhere around 14.5.
Life is good. Especially for a none mechanic type like me to have somthing go this easy, cost nothing (alternator warranty) and have it fix the root problem.

RE: trying to find out generator information

I think it about 4,000 watts which would give you little more than 33 amps at 120 volts. Hence the 4.0 at the beginning for 4.0 kilowatts (1 kilowatt = 1,000 watts).
I'm sure GeneratorJim or some other Onan guru will straighten me out if I'm wrong about any of this.

RE: F250 alternator replacement made easy. HELP

Been there done that. There is supposed to be a lever on the bottom of the tensioner, but I couldn't find it. I took a ratcheting tie down and fished it down the front of the motor. I placed the hook on the tensioner with the strap going down under the truck. I then attached the ratcheting part of the tie down to something solid (I think I used the front tow loop). I tightened the strap until the tension was released from the belt. Once I thought to use the tie down strap the job was a piece of cake. Good luck!!
I like this idea as I don't have to remove the fan shroud to get to anything.
OEM alternator went out at less than 60K. This new one lasted less than a year.

RE: F250 alternator replacement made easy. HELP

...If it is still under warranty you should get a free one, or a partial prorate. Buy a good one, again not from Autozone or other cheap source...once a year is far too often for me to replace alternators.
Just my $.02....good luck
I agree with getting tired of repeatedly replacing an inferior part. I'll go ahead this time and install the warranty replacement this time. If it breaks again, I'll go with an alternator brand that is "top shelf". Is Bosch a high quality alternator?
BTW, for anyone from the UK, I am using the US and Australian definition of "top shelf". Anyone curious by what it means in the UK can click here. Link is the the Encarta MSN dictionary.

F250 alternator replacement made easy. HELP

Vehicle: 2005 Ford F-250 with 6.0 turbo diesel
Problem: Voltage flucation of high 13VDC range to high 15 VDC range when at idle. Tested with a multimeter connected to battery contacts while truck was idling with the engine warm. Consistent wave type pulsating of the low the high voltage.
First noticed this when driving back from Atlanta after midnight. The headlights and the dash lights had a subtle pulsing at a steady rythm of about 1 second. Thank God it got us all the way home.
I'm about 98% sure the problem is the voltage regulator which I am also 98% sure is integrated into the alternator. The alternator is warrantied as the OEM went bad last summer and I replaced it.
So, two basic questions:
Anyone in disagreement about it being the voltage regulator integrated into the alternator?
Secondly and more importantly, anyone have any suggestion for locking the belt in the 'loose' position for easy alternator swap out?
Last time we replaced it we had to force/horse the tight belt over the pulley on the alternator. It was a real pain.

RE: All my roof seams?

Eternabond. The Webseal topped with a UV protector like Liquid Roof can be used to sort of blend the Eternabond in with the seams.
I did a complete rebuild of my roof in 95 and used Eternabond extensively. My rig stays parked outside and the roof has not leaked a drop since then. Check the link in my signature if you want to see some pics.

Aisle lights

My rig has some 12VDC string lights tucked behind some trim in the hall ouside the bathroom. Similar ones in a shelf over the bedroom closet. Most are burned out, rig is 1988.
Anyone know where I can get something similar? Maybe LED type.

RE: exhaust brake too strong

...Wonder if you might have a loose engine mount?
Not in any way very diesel or exhaust brake knowledgeable, but the other comments got me thinking along the same lines. When the engine and tranny go from driving the rear wheels to slowing them down, the forces are reversed and anything abnormal in the driveline mounting OR LINKAGE could cause a "bang" type noise.
Had a u-joint go out in an Army Chevy Blazer (called thenm CUCVs and had them in between the old jeep and HUMMV) in Iraq way back in Desert Storm and it made a bit of a bang.

RE: New batteries

Your comment about the batteries stating cold cranking amps makes me wonder if true deep cycle batteries even state such a specification or only straight amp hours.

RE: Furnace Amp Draw

So Brett,
Sounds like you are saying he has 35% of 420 amp hours or about 145 usable amp hours. Are true deep cycle batteries really 'hurt' by taking them below 50%.
At least it sounds like his 4 battery bank would get him through the night, even if the furnace was running wide open all night long.

RE: Tell me it's not so...

A few facts. A concealed weapons permit is only needed to carry the weapon concealed on your person. Many states will recongnize other states permits. For example, my GA permit is recongized by FL, TN and KY as well as others.
A person need not have a concealed weapons permit to have a pistol or long gun (rifle or shotgun) in the RV for protection.
Also, federal law provides legal travel through non-gun friendly states. For example, Illinois has some strict gun laws. To legally own a firearm and buy ammo, a person must have a state issue firearm owner's ID (FOID) card. It would not be legal for an Indiana resident to have a firearm in Illinois (certain exceptions for hunting, competitive shooting events, etc). But John Doe from Indiana can unload his pistol and lock in the trunk of his car and drive through Illinois on his way to Wisconsin and the federal law is supposed to protect him.
Now, with all the legal mumbo jumbo, some folks will elect to follow the philosophy of "I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6."

RE: Air compressors

A small Craftsman keeps my 8R19.5 tire inflated. Now, it can take a while if I need to add 20 pounds as the tank capacity is small and the compressor keeps cycling on.

RE: Revised - In need of help w/ furnace/lp issues - Long Post

Change out the regulator. It's cheap and easy to do and is probably your problem. Don't over think this till you do the simple things.
Brother, ain't that the truth.

RE: Furnace Information

Let me ask a few questions. How cold does it have to get before the furnace won't keep up? Does the furnace run continuously when it gets cold or cout out before it gets warm inside?
It might not be the furnace but a faulty thermostat that shuts off too soon/cold. What temp is the thermostat set at and where is it located?

Too many wires the same color

I have made some mods over time (relays on heaadlights, horns, extra gauges) and have several runs of the same colored wire. Auto store doesn't have too many color choices. I was thinking of getting a batch of electrical tape of different colors and then color coding each end of the same run to make it a litte easier.
Anyone have a better suggestion? Better yet, anyone know of a source where you can get wires with really unique insulation colors? What I mean is like the OEM wiring. Stuff like brown with yellow stripe, yellow with green stripe etc.
