RE: Undersized tow vehicles

:h The only problem I seen was with the Taurus. the Avalanche probably would have been OK if the guy knew how to tow with his automatic. the European video looks like a well matched setup.
Trying to figure out what you are geting at!

Flag pole mount

Hello. I got a 16' flagpole for X-mas and now that it is getting closer to bringing the trailer home I`m trying to come up with a good mounting idea. I can`t make a mount to put under the tires because my slide is on the one side and the awning is on the other! my other option is to mount to the front A-frame. I was going to get a pipe slightly bigger than the flagpole and U-bolt it to the frame. the only negative here is I`m worried about feeling the flagpole rattle around in the holder that I will make!
Does anyone else have any other mounting ideas? or does anyone else have the type of holder I`m thinking about making and if so do you feel it rattle around in the frame?
Thanks!

RE: Could you live without your bike door?

We had one on our 05 Cherokee. I really miss it! the door that we had was a narrow entry door that they used as a storage door. the bunk flipped up and the bikes went in. I wish we had it in our current trailer. by all means if it`s available, get it!!!

RE: found this excursion on CL

OK, the first thing (ODD) that struck me was that he says it hasn`t been titled (says he has the certificate of origin). that`s impossible!.......when you buy a new vehicle it automatically has to be registered. something isn`t right here. even if it is true, $40k is way too much! maybe $30k?

RE: Owners, past and present, of v10 Dodge Rams please respond.

Only gripe I have with it is that is LOTS of engine under the hood. Service access can be a bear.
Agreed. That is the first thing I noticed when I popped the hood the other day. Lots of engine and not lots of room for hands to get in there for maintenance/repairs.
It`s not so bad. the bad part is trying to replace cyl. heads on a V-10 truck!!! the damn things are so heavy, the first set I ever did I thought I was going to lose some fingers! after that one I always had a helper. everything else is pretty straight forward.
As for the power rating of the 5.9 gas motor......no wonder mine never had an issue tugging 13000lbs up and over the Rockies. the old Magnums were THE BEST towing motors ever made!. the produced plenty of low end torque which is perfect for towing. mine cruised 3500miles screaming at 3000rpm for 7-11 hours a day with no complaints and it only used a 1/2 quart of oil for the entire trip!!!
OK, I`m done bragging!

RE: Wireless thermometer

Glad this thread came up. I got one for X-mas and I`m still trying to figure out where to put it when I bring the trailer home. I was going to mount it to the underside of the frame rail out of direct sunlight. but after reading a few other ideas I really like under the propane tank cover. I`de like to mount it where I can see it because the remote sensor has a digital readout display. I may also velcro it to the side of the trailer when the awning is out. you want to keep it out of direct sunlight so it gets a proper reading.
Thanks again everyone.

RE: Owners, past and present, of v10 Dodge Rams please respond.

Also be aware that they had some problems with pourous heads! the antifreeze would leak into the rocker arm area, and that was on the early ones (96-98) other than that they were great motors.
Would you happen to know if this situation also occured with the 5.2 and 5.9 gas engines? Reason I asked, on my '98 5.2ltre the coolant level would slowly go down. I would add coolant to the bottle but over the period of month or two the level would be back down again. Truck was under warranty so I took it into Waldorf Dodge. Tech mentioned just what you said. He added a bottle of some type of stop leak, it was a small bottle with a Mopar identifier on it. Told me to take it for a long drive which I did. The loss of coolant stopped but I don't know for how long, I sold the truck.
The V8's I know had a problem with the intake gaskets leaking. My dad went through that twice on his 98 grand cherokee.
The 5.2/5.9L never had the coolant problem the V-10 had. however they did have problems with the t-stat gasket seeping. the coolant would seep out and then evaporate before you could see or smell anything. the intake gasket issue was with oil consumption and the real problem was the plenum gasket under the intake. they redesigned it with a steel gasket which fixed the oil consumption issue. I had the 5.9L in my 97 Dodge conv. van and towed 6300lbs with it. great motors with alot of power and low end torque!!!
What`s funny is back in 02 we got a Ram 3500 dually in with the 5.9L gas V-8 as a trade. the truck was a dog and I couldn`t imagine towing anything significant with that particular truck. If I could have swung it I would have bought it along with a supercharger. it was a clean loaded SLT Ram. at the time I didn`t have a trailer, thankfully I didn`t buy it.

RE: insecure or inconsiderate

Come-ON close the shades and go to sleep. No one wants to see in your window's they need to be closed with or without your neighbors porch light on.If they don't ask you to close your shade's then don't:R bother them about lights.Thief's don't like lights and they like to keep their property you could be the one they want to watch. We all have reasons to do what we do even you with the shades.Just my opinion.
Try having a nice quiet campfire at night with one of those scare lights on, kinda takes away from the camping experience even if it is at a "resort or parking lot" Wal-Mart excluded :B

RE: Rear Axle Differential Swap..Should we or not!!

OK, you can`t just run in 3rd instead of OD! unfortunatley it doesn`t work like that.Sure it does. The wheels don't know if the gear reduction happens in the transmission or in the rear-end.
by swapping gear ratios you effectively change the ratio in each of the gears in the transmission. kinda like leverage applied to a pipe the farther out you move the easier it gets i.e. changing gear ratios or moving the fulcrum point! if that makes any sense! :?Makes perfect sense, and I agree. But you're missing the point: running in direct with a taller (numerically smaller) rear-end ratio will give you more "leverage" than running in OD with a shorter (numerically larger) ratio. It's all about the final drive ratio, which is found by multiplying your tranny gear ratio and your rear-end ratio. The higher the result, the more leverage. In this case (assuming a 0.75 OD), 1.0 * 3.55 > 0.75 * 4.10. You'd need a 4.73 rear-end before you'd break even.
-- Rob
Right, bottom line is a gear change is the best thing to do rather than run in 3rd. I changed from 3.73 to 4.30 in my X and it is the best mod you can do. before the swap the truck couldn`t decide if it wanted to run in 3rd or O/D, 3rd and 4th were too low in rpm with the 3.73 the truck would struggle trying to maintain speed and I didn`t feel like running a faster speed in 3rd just to get the rpm up. with the 4.30`s the rpm is in the perfect spot at 65mph and it now tows without any effort.

RE: KALISPELL MONTANA

I`ll agree on Apgar if you don`t need hookups! we stayed at my cousins house up in the hills just outside Kalispell. we also went to Hungry Horse resevoir for a day another very nice campground. I`m sure there are others that are nice with hookups, which is what we actually prefer.

The running lights would not bother me because they are nowhere near as bright as the big white scare lights! even the yellow porch light isn`t that bad. I too would ask them if they could turn them off.

I had a Dodge van that I swapped from 3.55 to 3.90 and was a night and day difference! sometimes that few hundred rpm difference a gear swap will give you can make a huge difference in performance.
Good luck!
