RE: trailer aerodynamics

Not to steal the topic, is anyone aware of verifiable advantages to the Airstream design shape?
Yes... this Ad from the 80's explains that by towing an aerodynamic Airstream you would use substantially less HP and would save 20% in fuel. Because of these facts there is less wear and tear on vehicle drive trains which is another bonus.

RE: Questions re: Payload vs. Tongue Weight, and WDH

Another is the fact that you say the OEM does not recommend a WD
system. Sure many have and will use a WD system and no 'apparent'
problems, yet...
Again, bottom line is a risk management decision and I always say to
ask yourself who will pay if a warranty position is needed. Will the
folks who recommend 'sure you can'? If the dealer/OEM, then you are
on their turf and their ratings/specifications.
Of all the multitude of Honda Ridgelines that are using WDH's we have never heard of an issue.
Compare that to the multitude of issues caused by the weak and problematic GM receivers. Good thing the GM receiver is covered under warranty!!!

RE: Questions re: Payload vs. Tongue Weight, and WDH

Many import manufacturers don't seem to have a clue about WDH's.
The Honda Ridgeline for example is one of the best built, heavy duty, unibodied vehicles built today yet the manual says they too do not recommend the use of a WDH.

RE: Looking for a New Tow Vehicle

There are unibody vehicles that would tow that just fine, and get better fuel economy and drive better than a TrailBlazer. The Trailblazer chassis is a little rough compared to the competition.
A Freestar or Sienna minivan would have no problem (ditto with newer Honda minivan, and even the Kia/Hyundai minivans). For SUVs, you could look toward a Ford Freestyle/Taurus X/Flex, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9.
At least test drove some of the other offering before settling on a TrailBlazer. I think you will be disappointed with it after driving the others.
I would not wait to see what happens with your van. You will likely be left with a repair bill more than the value of the van.
Agree!

RE: Jordan brake contoller

The red knob on mine sticks too if not used. I had it apart 5 or 6 years ago. Can't recall much about it but it did work when I put it back together. Don't think it was that complicated.

RE: 20 inch wheels vs 17 inch wheels and towing

The world renown towing specialist near here very often recommends upgrading to a lower profile tire to improve stability.
I have seen this done with cars and SUV's. Wondering if the basic suspension found on trucks with their heavy solid axles take away from the advantage of the performance oriented tires.
In other words the truck suspension is just to low tech to match up with the higher tech tires.

RE: 20 inch wheels vs 17 inch wheels and towing

Since you have both sets of tire/wheels, try one and then the other and get back to us with a report.
Now there is the quote of the day. Go for it. Would be great to hear the results.

RE: 20 inch wheels vs 17 inch wheels and towing

"Generally speaking" lower profile tires will have less side play (wobble) than a higher profile tire (with the same ratings).
Less side play is a good thing when towing.

RE: Is it possible to get a decent vehicle under $5000....

YSE writes "Wanting 22 MPG was probably just wishful thinking.
Personally I really don't see why folks recommend minivans, they are rather limited in HP and torq and will have highway gearing (3-3.55 ratio), very soft suspension which makes for a very poor towing platform (rather squirmmy). Overall most minivans would have a hard time even getting 22mpg going down hill with the wind pushing them.
Buddy, you are so far off base with your comments it's a laugh.
FYI We towed a 23'TT for many years with a now, dated, Nissan Mini Van. I had enough power and TQ tow the trailer (dry weight was 3,500lbs, road ready 4,500lbs). The van had 3:89 gearing and the suspension was firm but compliant. The front sway bar was thicker than the ones found on an F250 Ford pick up from that era. The van towing the trailer was very stable and solo the van got 28mpg (imp).
The following tests were performed to analyze the stability of various vehicles. The mini van (Freestar) came out near the top of the list.

RE: Is it possible to get a decent vehicle under $5000....

that would work for towing a medium sized trailer? One around 20-22 feet long and about 4000 pounds, I guess. I'd prefer something (car, truck, suv, whatever) that gets at at least 22 MPG, but I don't know if that's asking too much for that price range.
There are cars or mini vans that will give you what you want. You will get 22MPG+ with some of these vehicles solo.
Some may require a custom built hitch or whatever but they are out there. For years we towed a 23' TT with a 1993 Nissan Mini Van with no problems. Ford Freestars, Siennas, and Oddy's also work.

RE: honda ridgeline

Too funny!
The Ridgeline website shows hundreds of happy Ridgeline owners showing off their stuff and the arm chair experts here who know nil to nothing about them trying to preach to the masses how baaaaad they really are.
Maybe we have a Billy Graham replacement here in the making... LOL

RE: Axles flipped = some strange looks

But that hasn't stopped people from asking "why does your camper sit so high".:R
I went for a test pull today, and everything seems fine. I can't detect any difference.
A guy I know of was in the same boat. Towing on a windy day he found the rig was a handful.

The Ridge is a very capable TV. You may be surprised to see what Ridgeline owners are happily towing with them. The IRS really helps these kinds of vehicles. The new Dodge Ram has followed suit and it too now has IRS upgrade.

Thanks for your time.

It seems like you truly care about having a safe towing experience. My hat comes of to you.
You live less than an hours drive from Can Am, world renown/class towing specialist.
Suggest you take your current rig and have them evaluate it and get back to you with the report. Maybe it needs nothing! Then you will know where you are at and or what you will need to do to make it optimal.
