RE: actual useable diesel tank capacity

Ok, I'm probably showing my ignorance here, but why wouldn't the "usable" be the same as "capacity"? Also, do the tanks have an actual "reserve" capacity or are you just providing a "name" for the amount of fuel left once the gauge hits "E". I've never known of a vehicle (gas, diesel, or otherwise) to run out of fuel exactly when the gauge is right on the empty mark... they always go below...just as the gauge goes above the full mark when you fill it.
Wouldn't when you suck it dry, you have used 150 gals? :h
Ron
You will not be able to use all the fuel a tank might hold for two reasons I can think of, one is you do not want to pull from the very bottom of the tank as dirt and water will will collect here, at the top of the tank you need air space for expansion of the fuel. The "Reserve" is a way to describle the fuel left in a tank once the gauge shows empty. This is really an inaccurate fuel gauge.

RE: First trip with DuraMax

Diesel owners repeatedly try to tell the world how much better they tow.
Most really don't believe or understand the difference until they actually tow with a diesel.
Congrats on the new truck. GM has the best drivetrain out there.
I have both a 1997 Chev. K3500 CC, LB, DRW, 4.56 axle, 7.4L gas pickup and a 2009 Ford F350 CC, LB, DRW, 4.10 axle 6.4L diesel pickup. I have done the same 3,400 mile round trip hauling a 2,000# camper and towing a 10,000# trailer with both trucks and both trucks handle the load well.
Yes, the diesel handles that load without breaking a sweat, but so does the big block gas engine with a bit higher axle ratio to allow it to operate in it's powerband.
As they say, actions speak louder than words. I notice your new truck is not a gasser.

HEY!! SAY SOMETHING NICE TO US FORD DIESEL GUYS!!!;)
OK, It makes a nice trade! ;)
Dodge gave us way more than I thought our old Ford 7.3 with 213,000 miles on it was worth.

RE: Wiring trucks and brakes on travel trailer

The 7th wire is an aux connection, unless you have back up lights or some other extra equipment, you do not need this wire. The six wires you have cover ground, charging, brake control, left signal, right signal, and running lights.
If the guy your talking to understands this, he is making your job sound harder than it is to justify his overcharge. If he doesn't know this then I question if he will know how to wire the plug. Either way I would avoid the guy that gave you that price.

RE: What's a good portable gas grill?

The $20.00 grille available at Wal Mart and other discount stores. It is small, light, and for 20 bucks you can toss it and get a new one when to dirty.

RE: spittin and sputterin

I suspect you have an air leak between the pump and water tank. I would tighten all connections and check the filter. The dye will not leak out on this pipe as it is on the suction side pulling air in.

Water leaks will ruin an rv fast. I would return it asap and let the dealer fix it. Make your own repair and if it still leaks they could charge you to remove your attempted repair.

RE: F150 with 5.4 and 3.73 or F250 with 5.4 and 4.10?

While you may never save the 8k cost of the diesle in fuel mileage alone, added with your higher resale value and you maybe be well ahead. As a bonus you get all the power you need. A 1/2 ton truck is going to limit your choices on a 5er to the smaller models.

RE: Looking to buy a 5th wheel and a truck to tow it with.

For fuel mileage, and power get a diesel. That size 5er with 4 slides, I would guess your going to need a 350 dually or more. Do not use advertised weights as these are usually much lighter than actual weight. For a 5er I would use 25% of the fifth wheels GVWR for hitch weight, plus 200 pounds for the hitch.

RE: What are the best quality travel trailers made

To the OP; all most all TT's use the same materials from the walls, carpet, vinyl windows, tires and on and on.
I would avoid fiberglass/filon sided units due to cracking and delamination problems. Plus the aluminum is lighter.
Sorry but you are wrong here, my 34' dual bunkhouse is lighter the my neighbors 30' single slide quad bunkhouse.
Mine is Filon sided over aluminum framing and his Jayco is aluminum sided over wood framing. His TT weighs in at 8.5K+ dry and mine is 7K dry. As far as delam I have not heard about any issues, as long as you keep up your end and check caulk and seams you won't have any issues with either.
Don
The delamination and cracking are very common, do a search.

RE: Towing Vehicle Advice

The 3/4 may have more towing capacity but the pin weight of the 5th wheel is were you can get in trouble. The one ton has more weight carrying capacity and for example, my 5th wheel trailer's pin weight is 3000 lbs. That added to the extra weight we put in our trucks will add up to a bunch. I went from a 1 ton single rear wheel truck to a duallie and I can tell the difference in handling.
ok guys, when i was looking i was thinking of a 3500 but dealer/friend had this on his lot(and no, don't even go there-he would have found me what I wanted). Told him i was looking for the highest weights to handle any future TT's and naturally figured bigger is better-until he showed me the numbers. He said due to minor differences(added weight) in the 3500 and/or the addition of duallies, the weights would be a little less. Pretty much what you add to 1 hand comes off the other hand.
For my year there was pretty much no difference between the 2500hd's and 3500's or between my 8.1L and the duramax(cept the additional $7K)
As for 1 ton always higher than a 3/4, see bottom with friends info. Like I said previously-it's not only the model but more importantly, the engine/drive train. Why ford would build something like that baffles the mind-IMO it was stupid.
As for duallies-thay may add stalibility(so does my wheel base) but the added weight has to come off the total capicity somewhere and add-at a minium-an additional $400 (or there abouts) when you go tire shopping. Trust me, I considered all of this befor i bought since i would be owning this TV for a while-duallies do look good though :)
This is right out of the towing guide from this site. These are the closest matches but do reflect basically the same info from my manual. Could not find mine in a dually model (m)
Hitch weights
2500HD Crew Cab & Chassis 4WD LB 8.1L V-8 12,000d,e/f
3500 Crew Cab 4WD LB 8.1L V-8 12,000d,e/f
3500 Crew Cab 4WD LB 8.1L V-8 12,000d,e/f,m
Fifth wheel weights
2500HD Crew Cab & Chassis 4WD LB 8.1L V-8 15,200 d,e/f
3500 Crew Cab 4WD LB 8.1L V-8 15,100 d,e/f
3500 Crew Cab 4WD LB 8.1L V-8 14,900 d,e/f,m
(manual says kingpin/goose neck should be 15-25% of trailer wt. up to 2500 lb-this looks pretty standard on all of em(2500hd/3500) ) reread manual and the 3500 duallies go up to 3500Lb pin weight @ 15-25% total TT weight.

Friend has a mid 00's (04-06-not sure which) F-350, 5.4L, 3.73, super cab, 4x4, short bed, tow pkg and told me it had a 9200 hitch limit. He swapped out the gears to 4.10 and it took him up to 11200. Also said something about hitch/5'er being the same weights. Just going by what he told me.
In additional, friend also got dropped from his insurance(AARP) because it was a 1 ton and they consider that 'commericial grade' vehicle and he had to go rounds about his licenese plates.
Your only looking at the set of numbers that list max trailer weight. You also need to look at GVWR for the truck and do the math on the hitch weight. The payload on a 2500 series truck will prevent you from ever towing the max weight 5er in the figures your listing.

RE: Towing Vehicle Advice

I don't have one but why is everyone saying 3/4 ton? If you are going to spend the money on a 3/4 ton, why not go all the way and get a 1 ton? Is there something I'm missing? Are they that much more?
actually with my TV (3/4) on a compareable 1 ton the hitch is the same but for a 5er i actually have a few hundred lbs better and add a little more over the dually models. dealer(friend) told me this when i was looking and didn't really beleive him till i looked it up myself. also it's not always the model of the TV as what it has for a power/drive train. Know someone with a 1t that even after a gear swap i still out pull-engine just don't have it. gotta consider the whole pkg.
Say what??????
