RE: Modern RCMP fiction...

The training camp in Regina is a great place to visit. The museum is very interesting although I was really hoping all those handsome recruits would be outside doing exercises in shorts. ;) I sure would like to know where they get those fabulous boots because I want a a pair. explorenorth, ask your son if he knows how I can get a pair, please. RE: Cleaning silver

Get some silver cream and silver polish and use the soft sponge. Follow directions carefully. Tarnex is okay, but will mess up the knife blades if they are stainless and not silver, so make sure you have silver knives and not just silver handles with SS blades. If you use the Tarnex, make sure you rinse the silver with warm, soapy water, dry it and then polish it with silver cream to get the beautiful patina back. Then come here and do mine! LOLOLOLOL Iris Don't use anything that would scratch the silver. You can buy polishing cloths at stores that sell china, crystal and silver.

RE: RV's turning into first home.

My daughter is out of work now. Can't find a job;Her unemployement check just barely covers the appt rent, which BTW is the cheapest you can find in this area without living in the Hood.I ask her to consider looking around for a used TT and pay for it with her small income tax refund. This would be 1/2 cheaper than her current rent.Is this wrong?I think its a very wise move until she can get back on her feet.Theres several quite C/G's around here and I've already did a history check of who's staying in the area,so it appears to be safe. I think it is a smart move. She will have a home of her own, albeit small and mobile, can reduce her monthly expenses by at least 1/2, hopefully save a little and be able to look for jobs in other places, where she can then just pick up and move her whole house to another CG until she gets settled there and if things go really well, sell the TT and not lose too much money on it. Win-win. Fact of the matter is, I don't know why more young people aren't looking at this as an option to apartment life and rent or a mortgage and a lawn. Iris

RE: Storage Lot Cost

We lucked out, less than a mile from home, owner and business - plus cats (no rodent issues) - on premises, 24/7/365. $50/mo. Outside on gravel pad. Iris

RE: Can you really leave your RV at Walmart while sightseeing?

We spent a day in a Chicago Wal-Mart lot. Our friends came to the Wal-Mart by taxi, we visited, shopped for dinner then cooked, ate and had a great time. We all left before dark. Hooray for inner city Wal-Marts! We spend many nights in Wal-Mart lots while traveling but never more than one in the same place because well - we are traveling. We always ask permission and never leave the MH vacant and go off elsewhere, if we are there to sightsee for a few days, we find a CG. But, I must agree, if the Wal-Mart manager says it is okay to stay a week, then fine by me. Here is the deal. We are from out of town, if we go to a CG for the evening, we will not be shopping at Wal-Mart that night and will pay our $30-45 in CG fees. Or, we can go to Wal-Mart and spend that money (or more) in the store (which we always do). We are parked where no shoppers park because it is too far from the entrance and are not in anyone's way and do not take up space needed for shoppers. It is a win-win for Wal-Mart and us. Not to mention that before lot docking at Wal-Mart, I never shopped at the local Wal-Mart stores. Now that I am familiar with their products and prices, I shop Wal-Mart at home for groceries, cleaning products, garden supplies, etc. so even when we aren't lot docking, Wal-Mart benefits from its lot docking policy. RE: SHAKEDOWN TRIP-NC- Guidance WELCOMED !

Nothing is more fun than that first trip out in a new RV. You will make all the same mistakes everyone else has made but none will be fatal. When you get parked it is: engine off; dump air bags; level; hookup electrical cable then extend slides. BTW if you have slides, pay attention to what you pack in cargo beneath them, you really don't want to crawl under there too much. Do not open your sewer line hook-up until you are ready to dump the black and grey tank. Fluids flow, solids stay. I always recommend a voltage meter plugged into a kitchen socket so you can easily monitor your electrical power. Have fun! Iris

RE: Will be out on the road soon

We didn't driveway camp for our first 'try-out' weekend. We went to a CG which was a 4 hour drive away and couldn't run back to the house for things we forgot. We packed light and made a list. It rained all weekend and we still had a blast. First things on the list - a door mat for outside at the entry steps and 2 umbrellas. Go to a CG near home for your maiden voyage. It is much more fun than camping at home. Take your rubber shelf liner and scissors and get that task done while you are there and measure your cabinets for wire shevles, etc. Have fun stocking the TT. Iris

RE: Are you from Louisiana

How about pacon pie? :) Only if the P is pronounced like a B. Oh and add to the Louisiana list: You call a sidewalk "the pavement". You not only know what a neutral ground is, put you know how to pull your car all the way into one or onto one in case of a flood. No one has balconies, they have verandas. You know someone who knows someone who caught a 3 inch flying roach. You have sucked on a fresh cut sugar cane stalk and tasted a few salt licks. You eat alligator pears while others eat avocados. You know what to do with a merliton and it requires shrimp. You can tell a Creole tomato from any other by smelling it. You were 4 when you ate your first raw oyster and swished it down with Tobasco and beer. You grew up on a street made of clam or oyster shells. You eat fish on Friday and you're not even Catholic. You know what a St. Joseph's Altar is and have eaten at many. It doesn't seem odd that an Italian is the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick's Day parade. You know where you got dem shoes. When you say you are going to "pass by" someone's house, it means you are going for a visit and a cup of coffee. You own Delacroix topsiders. You have a pirogue named after your girlfriend and it was her idea. You have push-pulled through a swamp before dawn to fill a few sacks with crawfish for a party. You won't eat nutria even if Paul Prudhomme cooks it. You have mosquito hawks and other people have dragonflies. Even a toad is a frog. You eat canned red beans named after a snake. You have necked behind the levee. Iris

RE: Walmart Parking Lot Courtesy?

Why oh why do the inconsiderate parkers bother you? If this bothered the Wal-Mart manager, he/she would make them move to a less inconsiderate spot. Are you taking up the cause for the other Wal-Mart shoppers? Why? If they don't like it, they can take it to the manager. Why are you wasting your time monitoring other people's RV behavior in a free parking area? If it bothers you this much, maybe you should go to a CG. And for those of you who wonder why we don't poney up the cost of a CG site, it is simple - because we don't have too. We are just fine in a parking lot, we have everything we need and there is no reason whatsoever to run 10-15 miles down the road to pay for and maneuver into a CG spot to park for a few hours. Do your thing, I'll do mine. Iris

RE: Purchasing class A -- what to look for?

Your idea of buying a slightly used, but not abused DP is spot on. There are a lot of great units out there now and there will continue to be a lot of great used units on the market. Look for leaks and rust, operate every system, drive it. It will have a Cummins or a Caterpillar engine and a Freightliner or Spartan Chassis, Allison 6 speed or the functional equivalent if there is one. All of these manufacturers are in business and you can get these systems serviced just about everywhere, so although you won't have a warranty, you don't need a dealer to work on this stuff anyway. It's only 4 years old, it should be in excellent shape. Good luck. Iris

RE: Do Dealers Remove All Manuals From Used MH's

All of our manuals were there. We found them in a crate in cargo with other things that the previous owners left behind. The dealer hadn't cleared the area out, so no one knew they were there. Some sellers no longer have the manuals to leave in the unit. Iris

Nothing to regret. I love everything about our MH, enjoy every minute I spend in it and feel blessed to have it. Iris

RE: Structural Failure - 2008 Adventurer 106 Truck Camper

Was it repaired? Have you gone to look at it to see the finished repairs? It was defective, it was repaired. You won't know if the repairs are satisfactory until you use the TC. The manufacturer is not going to give you a brand new trailer in an Even Steven swap with the old one and is not required to do more than repair the defect, which they claim to have done. Even a 'lemon law' (if you have any) limits you to the recovery of the pruchase price, not a swap for a new unit. Go get the TC and use it. If anything else happens to it or it starts to fall apart again then it will be time to get your lawyer on board and let him/her make all contact with the manufacturer thereafter. I am sure they will extend the warranty for an amount of time equal to the months the unit spent in repairs. Whoopee! Before you go to pick it up, call your lawyer and make inquiries about what rights you have other than repair and extension of warranty, pursuant to contract, i.e., suit to rescind sale or a comparable law by some other name. Good luck. This is really a shame on them, I hope they fixed it and you have no more trouble. Iris

RE: RV's turning into first home.

Let me see if I got all of this straight. Rising unemployment and home foreclosures is good for the used RV business. And people who go this route are running from creditors, not to mention that they will tarnish the appeal of RVing because it will become associated with homelessness rather than fun. Did I get it right? Maybe it is me, but I think employment and financial stability is good for the used RV business and if someone has lost both their job and their home, they are no doubt dodging bill collectors on all sides because they don't have any money to pay those bills and keep a roof over their heads and food on the table and lots of folks are living full time in RVs for all sorts of reasons and we see them all the time now as we have in the past but the appeal of RVing hasn't suffered as a result. I am confused. Iris

RE: Popup vs. Small TT

We had a pop-up when I was a kid. No a/c, no power, no bathroom. It had an ice box, a porta potty (for night when parents were too tired to walk us to the restrooms) and a sink with a hand pump faucet. Since we were little, we don't remember how miserable set-up might have been but those were the best camping times ever. We spent all day outside doing fun stuff and didn't even go into the camper until it was time for bed. When my parents bought a TT with a/c, a kitchen and a bathroom I felt crowded, the interior air was no longer fresh and invigorating and I couldn't face the heat of the day after spending the night in A/C. I stopped going outside. You won't be going to bear country for a while, by a little pop-up for now and keep living outdoors. Iris

RE: Bedding & Dinnerware

HINTS: I use only white sheets, pillow cases, blankets, towels and face cloths. It makes doing laundry in the huge machines at the CG's much easier - no dye bleeds from colored towels, etc. and the linens can be bleached if necessary. Even with just the 2 of us, I needed stainless eating utensils for 8. You can find everything you need at Wal-Mart, Anna's Linens and the Dollar Stores. Have fun shopping the bargains. Iris

RE: How Many Miles in 2-Weeks?

It's now or never. Set a plan of how many hours you will travel each day; depart early in the mornings, make a nice stop for lunch and some rest then get moving again. I would plan more time in DC - there is so much to see and do. Don't pass up George Washington's home in VA. It is a day trip. Write to your Congressman and ask for passses to the White House for the tour. It takes some time, so do this now. If you kids are miserable travlers, tell them that they either get on board for some heavy driving and a lot of fun or they can spend their vacation in Texas with no camping trips. I did a long trip with a couple of whiny, unhappy teens and before we got to Memphis from New Orleans, I stopped the car and made it clear that anyone who didn't want to continue on the trip should speak up now because we were very close to the airport and I would be happy to arrange a flight home to Grandma's for them. I was dead serious. However, if they made the choice to continue it meant they wanted to be on the trip so no more whining, complaining and fighting as it makes no sense to whine and complain about something they chose to do. This wasn't a forced march of misery, no one had to continue. If they were so miserable that not only could they not enjoy the trip but that they made everyone else miserable too they were free to go home to Granny's and wait for the rest of us to return home. They simply were not going to ruin my vacation with their bad moods. They chose to stay and their behavior improved dramatically - so much so that we all had a blast for the next 2 weeks and they remember this trip as being the best they ever had. For everyone with miserable, whiny, teens - be the adult. They don't run the show and they aren't allowed to ruin the show either. Iris
