RE: Is this deal too good to be true, just seems "fishy"?

If you send me the VIN number I can check it out for free at work if that'll help. However, I will be out of town for the next couple of days and not likely back to work until Thursday of next week.
The VIN is on the link... But honestly I think its a sham. The VIN could be pulled off another "like" vehicle that matches the description. There are no plates on the vehicle. The guy wants to sell it through ebay. His email is from a "free email" service, and his host http://www.99-winnebago-rialta.totalh.com/ totalh.com is a "free hosting service".
I searched for his given name in the 4 surrounding counties of the Dallas, TX area and he owns no property in the area.
I asked for his phone number, or address, or anywhere I could come see it, not response. The think stinks very heavily of sham. Especially because he only wants to sell it through Ebay.
Here is a copy of his email:
Hi I'm David;
The 99 Winnebago Rialta Class B Mini Motor Home still for sale. The motor home has 78,616, motor VR6, Generac NP 30G generator (120 Volts, 25 amps, 3000 watt). and it has had a complete pm service just completed. The title is clear and on my name. My final price is $5,900. I am forced to sell quickly because I need money to pay the mortgage on my house, so let me to know if you are still interested. Here are some pictures with my motor home that I have for sale: http://cort.as/9RB Also I will put the motor home on eBay at $5,900 buy it now! That way you will receive assistance for the purchase, paperwork, title transfer, because I'm member from 2002 and I have 100% positive feedback.
Thank you.
The cort.as is a redirector to point to an anonymous host.
Seems like any "normal" person who "needs the cash" on a killer deal would at least leave his phone number / address and deal with you like a human. LOL. Stinks of sham.

Several Questions about pup's etc.

2007 Fleetwood Westlake -
1) Nearly every time we go to a state park in Texas, our site is on some kind of asphalt. I lower the stabilizer jacks on our pup, and often they seem to "sink" a bit down into the asphalt! Would "sand feet" fix this problem? Also is sand feet the thing I need to stabilize on regular dirt ground (in case we boondock?)
2) Will an under powered generator hurt anything? I bought a 900W 2 stroke generator from Harbor Freight tools. I plugged in my pup and everything was fine. Lights, frig, water pump, plugs... Then I got morbid curiosity. I turned my A/C on "low cool" and sure enough the compressor turned on and the thing started cooling! Could I harm anything by using an "under powered" generator? (The generator was only $79 bucks!)
3) I travel without a battery on the pup and I'm wondering how other people keep their frig cold on the road. I guess I have a 12V wire somewhere (I don't connect all the wires while on the road). I'd really like to have the frig stay cold. I've tried using the propane, but it doesn't seem to "stay lit?" while on the road.
4) What kind of brake controller would be good?
5) Where can I buy a very durable and high quality crank?
6) Can I put a sway bar on a class II hitch?
Ok I think that is it for now. Figure its better to ask all this in 1 thread than clog the forum with 6 threads :o)
Thanks.

Pup toilet fun!! Yippie Skippy!

Is there anything I can do in my 2007 fleetwood westlake to make the toilet "better". Perhaps more private, vented, or anything like that.
It's just so "raw" - a thin plastic curtain. Is there anything that can "thicken it up" or any other suggestions that can make the whole "toilet" experience better?
We have 5 kids in there with us. We are kind of newbies to the whole pup thing so any advice is appreciated!!

RE: Popup parts? Where can I find them online?

Chris,
Unless I missed it, I couldn't find the make of your unit in your thread or signature.
It would help for me to know the make and year so I could better guide you to a parts source.
I have a 2007 Fleetwood Westlake.

Popup parts? Where can I find them online?

I can't seem to find popup camper parts online at all. I can find some add ons, but not little parts. I'm looking for the following two things.
On the center bracket that goes over the beds, there is a C shaped plastic doohicky that connects to the main push out bar. We snapped of part of the C. I can't find this piece anywhere.
Also I am looking for a cargo carrier like this one that attaches to the back of the pup:
http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/rvs/1558042473.html
Any large popup parts dealer would be great as well. Thanks.

National Forest Camping Questions

1) Do you hear gunshots all night long at national forests during hunting seasons?
2) Are national forests much more private that most state parks?
3) Is there a sense of freedom in national forests over that of state parks - EDIT - Is there constant park rangers driving around being watched, feel that you are around other campers as much, have nosey neighbors.
4) Is registration mostly on the "honor system" ie- pay in envelope, or do you have to go in and register etc.
5) Is dispersed (or free) camping very private? Can you usually run a generator without problems while camping in these types of sites?
6) Is safety an issue - such as robberies over that of state parks (never had any problems at state parks)
7) Is there any fee to get into National Forests?
8) To "boondock" or "dispersed camping" in a national forest, do you just simply drive in, find a remote site without hookups, and set up? Or do you have to go into the park HQ and tell them?
If you know the answers to any of these questions, I would appreciate it. We have a pop up camper with a full bathroom, and a small generator (800W) that we fit next to our propane tank. We are very curious about national forests as many Texas state parks are often very full & booked out. Also many Texas state parks have sites right on top of one another.
We are looking for cheap, private, and remote. I'm just concerned about safety and gunshots etc. We have 5 small kids and have camped at nearly every state park in Texas now.
Thanks a lot!

RE: Kids and video games in the RV

The only thing we allow is an occasional classical movie to play while on long drives. This means movies like "The sound of music".
Otherwise, NO videos, No Games, or anything like that while camping. Board games, cards, reading and numerous other activities while in the camper. Camping is an "escape" from normal life, and family time is emphasized.
If there are LONG periods of bad weather though (several days), I may bring in our laptop and let the kids play a bit. But that's it.

"check in" process at national parks / forests?

I have a problem with Texas state parks. When we arrive, we go in, and they collect your drivers license, check reservations, and I also believe they run a "background check" of sorts on you before you stay at the state park. With nobody waiting, the check in process is often 10 minutes. If there is somebody else being helped, I've waited over half an hour. It really is annoying.
Are national parks and forests this way? Do they even collect your drivers license & run checks? Is it just an "honor system" payment envelope?
Thanks

RE: National Forests Vs. State Parks Vs. Private?

Yeah no reason.
Do NFS parks have any problem with people running generators at night? (of course on boon dock sites)
Thanks

National Forests Vs. State Parks Vs. Private?

I have a large family (with 5 kids aged 10 down to 1), and so far we have only gone to state parks. We had a state park pass here in Texas, and used it a bunch. The pass has since expired, and so many of the state parks around here are booked out all the time on the weekends.
So basically, my question is, how good are national forests? Do you feel "safe" in them as much as you would at any state park? Are they generally prettier than state parks? We use our pup from anything from camping, to a mobile hotel.
Here is basically what we don't want....
1) Loud trashy parks where people are drunk throwing parties next door.
2) Live in parks - where the people above live there and its more than camping or temp stays.
3) Motorboat lake places... This means loud radios and drunks all over the lakes revving 275hp motors all day.
Here's what we do want
1) Quiet. Yes our 5 kids extend that courtesy :o)
2) Private to semi private
3) Experience with nature
4) Most of all safe. Don't want criminals or drunks to come pound on our popup door.
SO basically we need advice on what to look for... I'm taking it that most "drunk party" campgrounds are private.... Is there a way to know?
One other thing, boon docking is fine, so long as I'm allowed to run a 1500 watt generator for the A/C at night.
Thanks

RE: Hitch locks

Look guys, if its a pro thief, they are going to get it.
All they would have to do is bring this
Cordless cutoff tool
and almost any security measure you can implement is gone in less that 1 minute.
This goes for cables, boots, locks etc.
The only thing you are going to prevent is a typical thief or thief of opportunity from stealing it. If they come sporting a 42" pair of bolt cutters ($28 at harbor freight tools) or a cordless dremmel with a fiberglass cutoff disk, most things will be compromised within minutes.
Really the best thing you can do is store it in a safe place, leave a ball in the hitch and lock it with an $8 lock (from walmart) through the coupler (can be used as the pin as well). This will keep the "dumb" thieves away at least.
If it is a pro say goodbye and be glad you have insurance.
We just store our pup in the garage.
I have yet to hear of pups being very prone to theft. I'm more worried when we leave it at a campground to run around town, that somebody breaks in - which would NOT be hard. I for one always look out for my neighbors rigs, I assume others do the same.

Are screen rooms / add a rooms worth it on pups?

We are thinking of investing in a screen room for our 2007 Fleetwood Westlake.
Really I'm just wondering if they are really worth it? What are the pros and cons, your experience?
Thanks so much

1988 Allegro - won't shut off. Choke?

So the problem description is simple I start up the vehicle, runs good. Turn the key off, still runs good!!!!
Engine stays running, dash "CHOKE" light comes on.
I'm not sure where to troubleshoot first. I know the choke is down by the carb? Perhaps just stuck? I'm sure this can be the ignition key / cylinder too, but it is triggering a light so I think the key/cyl MAY be working ok.
So far I just squirt in a lot of carb cleaner to shut it off.
So where exactly is the choke, and what would be the steps to try to diagnose this and/or fix.
Thanks a lot.

RE: Need more info on Class A parking in cities...

Ok thanks so much for all the advice and stories. I certainly do not mind hiking or walking a bit.
If we have to park a few blocks out, we'll just throw the baby in the "baby backpack carrier" and teach the kids that walking is fun too!
Parking in the big cities seems to be absolutely the most intimidating. But after some of these stories, I'm sure we'll be fine.

Need more info on Class A parking in cities...

We are kind of making a hard decision.
We have a popup now that has a shower, toilet etc.
An opportunity came where we can purchase a class A from a family member (a "family" deal). This class A really can't tow our minivan which we will need for my wife, myself, and our 5 kids. (2500 lb tow limit)
Anyway, we have thought long and hard about it, and for the most part, the class A seems like the good choice. Bathroom / food on the "road" etc. Even boondocking / wallydocking sounds great for a quick stop. I also love the idea of the battery redundancy using genny batteries if main Class A batt dies to start etc.... So much seems nice.
I'm pretty sure we'd have no problem parking at stores, most diners etc. Simple solution, we just park far out. Of course, state & national parks NO problem. Most places, no problem.
My problem (I think) is PAKRING in the CITIES. (Correct me if I'm wrong please) We sometimes visit San Antonio. Visiting places like the Alamo I can't imagine in an RV. (Do you get a parking meter or two consecutive meters and feed them both?)
Do large cities even allow you to park an RV in them?
What do some of you do about parking in cities (or do you?) ?
Thanks so much, trying to learn as much before we spend the $.
