RE: Mechanical Breakdown - Help Diagnose F-53 problem

Is this common in heavy rains?
thx
Jro
VERY common. Most of us with the V-10 has most likely had it happen to us at one time or another. As mentioned, Ford has a fix for this problem. There have also been a couple of DIY fixes as well. Do a search on "FORD V-10 WATER INGESTION" or a similar search and you'll find plenty of info here.
I did my own DIY fix while on a trip in heavy, steady rain, when mine started to ingest water. Fortunately, I always kept two new air filters on board just-in-case I had the problem. Luckily, when mine started to "drink" water, the exit I pulled off of landed me in a small plaza, right in front of a hardware store! (How's that for luck?) After the rain had stopped and the weather started to break, I just removed the bottom of the air cleaner assembly, then fastened a length of metal/foil dryer hose to the bottom with a couple of hose clamps. I then made sure that it was sealed up and held on well with some Gorilla Tape. I ran the other end of the dryer hose up into the top of the engine compartment and held it up in place with a couple of plastic electrical ties. It was only supposed to be a temporary fix until I returned home from the trip. However, my DIY fix seemed to work so well, that I just left it alone. That was two years ago. I haven't had a problem since and I have driven in heavy rains since then.

RE: Mechanical Breakdown - Help Diagnose F-53 problem

Clogged Fuel Filter?
The OP mentioned that the tech checked the fuel pump, but does that mean that he checked the output pressure? If so, did he check it before or after the fuel filter? Just a thought.

RE: Door Won't Open

Don't start wrecking something else (sylights, windows etc.) to solve the initial problem. The handle/latch assembly is obviously shot anyway, so drill it out and get the door open. Then, order a new handle assembly and install. OR, first order the new handle assembly then drill out the old one and get the door open.

RE: Advice Requested: 1993 Southwind 30ft Class A Motorhome

Folks, I am a first time entry RV'er, and am considering purchasing this unit, as it is within my serf's budget. I know with cars there are many sites with many owner comments. I can not find the same with specific motorhomes.
So what I ask is do any of you have any advice, hints, or comments on this particular unit, and anything specific to look for.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Gerry
"1993 Southwind 30ft Class A Motorhome
Very clean well maintained coach, 454 chevy, fuel-injected with overdrive. 10.5 to 11 mpg towing my Saturn. New upholstery, newer Fridge, new batteries, nrw digital TV, Steer safe steering, hydraulic levelers, good tires. "
1993 454 should be TBI, throttle body injection, and should give 7 to 9 MPG, at least that is what our 1994, 30' Fleetwood has and does for us. Our MH handles GREAT without any add-ons but that seems to be very rare. Take it for a really good test drive and also see if you can get it weighed. Very little left on the rear axle as far as capacity before overloading the axle. Lots of extra on the front but nowhere to put stuff. We drive with only 1/4 tank of fresh water.
I agree with RV-1/2n-FUN with the mpg of 7 to 9, which is more realistic. I don't know of any gassers getting 10.5 to 11 mpg, especially when towing. Either the seller is just inflating the numbers or his method of calculating mpg may be unknowingly flawed. Do a search here in Class A motorhomes and you'll see what other and similar gassers are getting for mileage.
Good luck with your decision, whatever it may be.

RE: Camping World may re-open Hamburg, NY store

That's great news for us as we live in the southern tier. It gives us somewhere to go for a ride. Thanks for the information. I've had really bad experiences with Buffalo RV and will not spend one penny with them. I sure hope they don't have anything to do with CW.
TBSBJAY, From what I know, Buffalo RV does not have any (known) tie-in to Camping World. I'm led to believe that they are part of the RVONE/RVDIRECT group. I pass Buffalo RV everyday to and from work. I have yet to stop in to look at any units (which I plan to do as the weather continues to improve around here). However, since I pass them daily, as a matter of convenience I had stopped there a couple of times in search of parts and accessories. Out of the three or four times that I stopped by, they only had what I needed once. Anything else had to be special ordered. CW on the other hand, had it on the shelf. I'm curious to see how they will be to deal with when looking at units.

RE: 5th Fall Friendship Gathering 9/25-27, 2009, Verona, NY

....... :R Spring is taking forever to get here! :(.....
........sigh!....still waiting :R........
Hey! What's that? Is that a light-at-the-end-of-the tunnel that I see? Temps in the lower to mid 40's and sunny all this week and beyond! Prediction is that the temps will be into the 50's here by the end of the month. Looks like spring is finally comin'! Only three weeks away from our annual take-the-cover-off-of-the-MH date (April 1st) and when the first of a few of the local campgrounds are scheduled to open. We're gettin' there!

Camping World may re-open Hamburg, NY store

Camping World RV Sales had recently returned to their former building here in Hamburg, NY (off of I-90, Exit 57).
While driving past the other day, DW and stopped in to see what they had with regard to used DP's. Not much right now. Several Class A and Class C gassers and alot of TT's and Fivers. However, in conversing with the Salesman, we had mentioned how inconvenient it was now to have to drive a little over an hour to the next nearest Camping World Accessory store. He told me that due to the amount of mail and email received after the Hamburg NY Store closed last year, CW Corporate is seriously considering re-opening the Hamburg Store. He said that it seems as if it might be happening soon.
Say what you will about CW, but there are several items that I use on my rig that aside from driving over an hour for or ordering online, were only available locally at CW. They were very convenient to have in-the-neighborhood for parts and accessories.

RE: Source For LED Light Fixtures

While not internal lighting, I changed out my tail light clusters and my two front/side turn signal/marker lights to LED's. I purchased them from PPL Motorhomes.
I have purchased many items from them. They always seem to have what I need in stock and their customer service has always been very helpful. Their online catalog is pretty extensive as well.

RE: How few miles

What is fewest number of miles from home that you've stayed in your MH? Not counting the driveway... oh and sorry full-timers you don't count... and I'm jealous.
Brian
4 miles....to the closest state park.
...and you were probably grumbling the entire way about the cost of the fuel to get there! :B:B

RE: 2008 Pace Arrow loud noise when driving at highway speeds

I had a noise like that in my 2000 Fleetwood Storm and it was the GRILL. The wind going over the cross pieces of the grill set up a harmonic noise, just like you described. If your grill has cross pieces, Try to eliminate the grill as a source of the noise by using Duct tape across the grill pieces as a temp fix. If that is it of course a more permanent fix would then be in order.
Yep. I have a 2000 Storm and that very same anomaly occurs when the wind direction vs. coach direction of travel is just right. It doesn't bother me as long as I know what the noise is. It's the strange noises that I can't identify that make me nervous!

RE: THE SHIFT LEVER FEELS '''FUNNY'''

As a matter of fact, I noticed that my shifter was just starting to feel a little "funny" just a shortly before I put the MH away for the winter. When I get it out of storage in the spring, I'm going to take a look at the gadgetry that you've described under there. Thanks for posting that "fix".

RE: Gas MH owners who changed shocks

When it was time replace mine I went with Monroe Gas Magnums purchased from NAPA. In addition, I had also added A Davis True-Track Bar to the Front, a Henderson Rear Track Bar and a steering dampener for handling. It greatly improved the ride and handling from the stock set up. However, regardless of how much one spends all of the latest "improve your ride" gadgetry, it's still a leaf spring suspension under there. You'll only improve on it so much.

RE: Override auto TV shut off

Mine has a TV cutout fuse that was removed. This allows the front TV to operate while MH is moving.
Tom
QUESTION: If the outlet is fused, and with the fused removed the outlet is still hot, then what is the purpose of the fuse? If the fuse blows or is removed, wouldn't that open the circuit?

If you go the the website for Motorhome Magazine, you'll find that each year they publish a dinghy towing guide which will outline the towing capabilities of vehicles. You may find it very helpful.

RE: How many use ICC lights

Here's a suggestion that some with DP's with air brakes may find helpful..
If you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles website for your particular state, you should be able to view and even download the drivers manual for CDL (with Air Brake Endorsement). Even if not applying for a CDL, just reading the manual would be beneficial in learning more about the proper operation of large vehicles as well as air brake systems. There is a lot of useful and educational information in these manuals that can also be applied to the operation of large RV's as well.

RE: How many use ICC lights

You have got to remember most truckers do not like the class a drivers because you are out there with a operators license and not a CDL with a Air Brake endorsement.
Why would a trucker care what kind of license you have? Even better why would they not like you because of your endorsement?
In a perfect world, you are correct. However, when human nature comes into play, that sometime changes the way things are percieved.
I think what sauerjoel is referring to is that some truckers may feel that they had to spend a lot of time and money for specialized training to become professional drivers. Then, here come us RV operators with our 30,000+ lb. MH's, sometime pulling massive trailers, tooling up and down the same roads with nothing more than a standard drivers license and very formal training in the operation of large vehicles.
While there are certainly some RV operators that shouldn't be anywhere near the wheel of a large RV, there are truck drivers that shouldn't be allowed anyhere near the cab of a big rig. By the same token, I know some automobile drivers that if it were up to me, I wouldn't allow to drive a bicycle!

RE: Fuel tank filling slow

Does it help if you don't put the nozzle all the way into the filler tube.
The filler tube probably does not have much down slope to it and when the tank starts to fill it does not vent if the nozzle is all the way in. Leaving a little space for air to escape may help prevent the nozzle from shutting off.
I found that I had a similar problem with mine when I bought my MH. In doing the same as described above, haven't had a problem since. As long as I don't insert the nozzle all the way in, I won't have a problem filling up.

RE: Speeding ticket?

OK. Here's a good one for you all....
Although not a spending ticket, I was pulled over (in the MH) and ticketed for crossing a double yellow line. Here's the kicker...there was no double yellow line! In fact, there weren't ANY lines!
The road had just been repaved and the lines had yet to be painted. While I was discussing it with the officer, DW went into the back and took a picture out of the rear bedroom window showing the road along with the Police cruiser behind us which clearly showed no road markings.
The police officer told me (I'm paraphrasing here) that although there were no visible road markings, there is still a presumption of the markings when using that road. I printed out the photo and took it to court with me. The Judge let me off.
