RE: South Dakota Vehicle Registration

Along with the benefits stated above, SD has no annual safety inspections and no emissions (smog) tests. To me, that means "no hassles". I like the way they run their state.
One thing I will warn you about is: when I moved from VA to SD, my comprehensive coverage on both the MH and car went way up. Something about hail and tornados.

RE: Nitrogen in North Georgia

I think all Costcos have nitrogen if you really think it will make your ride better. Some places charge for it. I think it's free at Costco. As said above, in several different ways, there in NO appreciable benefit to using it. It's a marketing scam like MOUSE MILK.
but...... If you can get it for free, why not try it? :W

RE: best tow 4 wheels down

As said earlier: "It all depends on your needs and desires." I tow a Subaru Forrester, 4-down. All Subarus are all wheel drive and the ones with automatic transmission are not towable 4-down without modification. I have had only American cars my whole life but given the status of GM (Saturn) and Chrysler (Jeep), I just could not buy a Saturn or a Jeep.
The Subaru is easy to tow, suits my needs (I like to go exploring in the boondocks), has been very reliable and gets great gas mileage.
NOTE: Please don't turn this thread into a political free-for-all. I have my opinion and I respect you're opinion. I don't need to be chastised by "Buy American" zealots. Throughout my life, I have almost exclusively bought American. Peace to all.....

RE: Monico Parts and Service

This guy has a pretty extensive supply of Monaco parts that go back 15-20 years. Owner is Joe Cioli. I've gotten stuff from him and can tell you he's very easy to work with and very honest. I bought stuff from him when I was there last summer, had a problem with the slide I bought after I left and he made good on it. Call him at 866-678-7467

RE: Washer dryer ??????

Well, like most of the questions on here, the short answer is "It all depends..." We're on our 3rd MH is 20 years. The one I have now is the 1st with a washer & dryer. I would say "If you are a weekend/vacation RVer, it doesn't make much difference." As full timers, we would not be without them. Ask yourself "do I want to spend 4 hours each week sitting is a hot noisy laundromat or do I want to throw a load in each day as I need to?"
I've never used one of those all-in-one washer dryers but I have talked to full timers who say they are useless. Your mileage may vary.

RE: Need your experiences

Hi, full timer here (3yrs +) living on Social Security and a small pension (much smaller now that the economy has gone belly up). We have a 45' DP with all the bells and whistles. Paid about 1/2 the original price when it was 2yrs old (could have been a great deal or could have gotten hosed. you never know). I was amazed at how much we saved when we got rid of the stick house (mortgage, 2nd mortgage, ins, utilities, taxes, etc, etc). We really living much more cheaply now and enjoying it more.
As said above, if you can find something that suits your needs and fits your budget, buy it. We have no regrets. Only you can decide if the lifestyle in right for you. Do you have any kids and grand kids still living near you? If so, what level of physical and emotional support do they provide? Any life long friends or neighbors you would dearly miss? The list goes on and on but you get the idea.
We have had no problems with medical care. DW is diabetic and had 4x by-pass surgery the year before we hit the road. We tend to stay within 30 - 50 miles of larger cities (ie, Corpus Christy, TX, St. George, UT, Rochester, NY) so medical support has been easily accessible and high quality.
What ever you decide, best wishes and keep coming back to this forum and others like it for more information.

RE: Engine Brake Question

I didn't notice in your post what year your MH is but if it's not too old (like more than 10 yrs), try the manufacturer's web page or call their cust serv dept. You should get a definitive answer there. I'm only familiar with Monaco so I don't know the status of your manufacturer.

RE: Flying J

We do it all the time when we're in-route and only want to stop long enough to have something to eat and get some sleep. If possible, we buy fuel where we sleep as a courtesy to the business owner.
If you want to try, here a few things to consider:
1) Yes, it can be noisy but I find that I can ignore the constant drone of a truck engine after a while. (YMMV)
2) We tow 4-down and sometimes there are no "pull-through" spots available. I just pull straight in, un-hook in the morning, back out each vehicle and reconnect. Takes me less than 5 minutes.
3) It's usually too tight to put your slides out and if you arrive early enough to have an open spot next to you, I think it's kind of rude to take up 2 spots by putting them out.

but there have also been people post on here that have been stopped, measured and heavily fined.
Funny, but I can't remember reading any of those posts.:h
Ummm, thats because there are none...
OK, I don't want to spend the whole day researching this thing but here's one example. If you need more info do a search on the class A board. Over Length link NOTE: this post is recent - Sept of 2009

RE: Pros and cons of large tag axle rigs

Thinking of moving up to a 45". My question is, what is the downside. Not the oblivious, but the thinks only owners would know about. I'm very comfortable with large trucks, road building equipment, etc. so I'm not afraid of them, but maneuvering through typical camp sites and these NW mountains does concern me a bit. How about tag axles, are they worth the extra initial and maintenance cost.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Bill
We have a 44' w/ tag and we love everything about it. As full timers, we appreciate the additional weight carrying capacity. That means the ability to carry 4 slides, washer and dryer, tile floors and all the other amenities you get with a big coach.
The one drawback (if you want to consider it a drawback) is that I had hoped to get an enclosed 24' trailer for my "stuff" (everybody needs a place for their "stuff" - Geo Carlin) but I would be over the 65' max length that most states have. I know there are lots of folks out there towing over length with no consequences but there have also been people post on here that have been stopped, measured and heavily fined.

RE: Full time rig

thgoodman, Tiffin builds MH's, OP Says he has 5er.
Jim
Perhaps you should re-read the 1st sentence of the post. It said "I would like opinions on what you all consider a FT coach" I read that as he is considering a move to a motorhome (coach) from his present 5er.

RE: Finding West Coast Destination parks ?

RoadXYZ, check out Zion River Resort near Zion National Park and St. George, UT. We came out here in July '08 and have never left. Shopping, medical care, cultural events and scenery in and around St. George are all outstanding. Checkout the ZRR web site. Nice community of snow birds, friendly folks, great management, planned activities.

RE: Full time rig

Skip, sorry if this is a wee bit off topic but, did you look at Tiffin? They have always seemed to me to be the top of the line that mere mortals can afford. Obviously, if you go for a custom Prevost, all of your needs will probably be met. :B
We started out in a 37ft '91 Beaver (the original company) with no slides. The workmanship was far better than any MH built today but it was just too small to live in full time. We have since moved up to an '06 Beaver (Monaco) with 4 slides. A great improvement in livability but the quality just doesn't compare.
Good luck on your search and we home you enjoy full timing as much as we do.
AVAN, curious about your opinion, too. Did you look at Tiffin?

RE: Highway 89 from Fredonia to Marble Canyon

I think you are asking about 89a through Jacob Lake, UT. As others have said here, it's a good road but with long grades and many curves but they run loaded semi-trucks through there all the time.
Two things to look out for:
1) A 10 mile, 6% downgrade with numerous turns will cook your brakes if you're not careful. :E I did it in my 45ft DP towing a Subaru Forrester with no problems but I have a jake brake. I would not be willing to try it without an exhaust brake or an engine brake.
2) There is often snow around Jacob Lake when the weather is perfectly warm and nice at the bottom of the Hill from early Sept through May. I would definitely not want to be up in there with snow on the road. Check road conditions before you go.

RE: ZipDee Awning Owners

I had a ZipDee on my last motor home for 10 years. I had it deploy going down the road twice and both times it was TOTALLY MY FAULT. Their latching system is excellent and holds the awning firmly in place even at 70+mph. The awning is the easiest to deploy and store of any I have had ant their customer support is great. Both times, the reason I had it deploy going down the road was that I forgot to close the locking mechanism when I stowed the awning. :S

um... "but think we are definately higher with this rig"? :E My advise to you is to KNOW how high you are including A/Cs and anything else sticking up from your roof. Measure your rig at ride height and put a sign on your dash. Better safe than sorry. :B
