Okay. It is clear that we have or will have a problem with our GM trucks having a piston slap.
So, is there anyway we can run the engine to stop, or reduce, the piston slap, i.e. run the engine at high RMP for awhile? What if the truck is used to pull a trailer. Will pulling a heavy load reduce the chance of piston slap?

Are '03 engines susceptible to piston slap?

thanks ken

My 2003 8.1 has terrible piston slap, but only until it warms up, so there is no noise while towing.

Yes, the '03's are still susceptible to piston slap. There is no remedy for this. All you can do is to have your GM dealer CONFIRM that you do have piston slap, then call GM at the 1-800 number, and GM will give you a free, 6 year/100,000 mile warranty on the complete engine, right down to hoses and seals and pumps etc. They say it is 'not a problem nor will it become one', however, in the name of 'customer satisfaction' they are offering this coverage. I have it myself, I have the warranty, but I was pissed as this was the ONLY thing GM would do to remedy the situation. I had already purchased a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty for the same term, and I did NOT need GM's engine coverage, so basically, I ended up with no satisfaction whatsoever.

Please tell me what is piston slap, what does it do to your engine, and how do you know you have it.

Piston slap comes from a rocking within the cylinder of the piston skirts. It shows usually with short-skirted pistons, as is the typical design today. I believe all manufacturers have dealt with it from time to time. Once the heat of combustion expands the skirts they run close to their designed clearance and quiet down.

It is a rattle type sound, a little like the sound of a diesel but no where as loud.

My take on it is that in all but a few cases it will not be a problem and these engines will live long lives.
