We have a 2003 Ford Diesel, and it still has the original batteries, they are coming up on 5 years old.Should I replace them or just wait untill one of them,or both go bad? I know I will have to replace them both when the time comes.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.
If I only got 5 years from a battery, I'd never buy that brand again, unless failure was me doing something dumb.

I have a bad habit of letting my vehicles sit and the batteries tend to die. So I usually need to replace them every 2-3 years because I can tell when i crank the vehicle over that the battery is on its last legs since i have discharged them too much.
If you use the batteries regularly (drive daily) then dont change them unless you are experiencing some problems. Batteries are usually forgiving. They dont just die on you all of a sudden (unless you do something very wrong). You will know when the time has come.
In 99% of cases where people need a "jump" it is because of a bad alternator/charging system or they drained the battery. Nothing a new battery would ever fix. With the exception of course, of those people who ignored the "warnings" the battery was telling them for weeks or months. LOL

You have a decision in mind or you probably would not have asked. Your diesel either will start or not start and if you have a weak battery, you probably aren't in the mood to get stuck somewhere or ask for a jump. If that is not the case, why not nurse it along? Are you sure they are in parallel where you need to change them both together? Pretty sure Ford has an isolator.

PM is a good idea but it does depend on usage. The cost of an employee getting stuck with a dead battery and calling for service and be expensive in both time and money. If you are not going to be missed put going out to dead batteries you could run them to they drop.
My desire for good batteriers in a gas burner is to increase my driving range should the alternator fail but with an MH the loss of engine charging can be offset by running the house gen set.

There are two schools of thought: If I owned hundreds of vehicles and I had to rely on them starting and running at the drop of a key in order to get the goods to the addressee on time: I'd likely replace them the day the warranty ran out.
However since I don't: I carry a jump start battery, plus in the motor home I have that handy Aux-Start (or Emergency start) button, so I would let them go to the bitter end. Unless I got one "Heck" of a deal on a replacement that is. And to be honest I've not seen many deals like that
