We are pondering (like the rest of Alberta probably) our options for a May long weekend trip. A trip to Radium area seems to be popping up to the top of our brainstorming list of general areas/locations.
We've driven through Radium exactly once, in the middle of winter on the way back from a ski trip to Kimberly.
This would only be a weekend (long weekend) trip.
Would like to hear about your most and least favorite campgrounds in the general Radium area. Would love any/all details and thoughts you can provide. In particular, I hope you'll include some comments as to WHY you like (or don't like) a particular campground.
Thanks in advance.
Constructive disagreement is encouraged. It is how I/we learn!

You can't beat Redstreak campgrounds. It is in the National Park and is one of the best. Walking distance to the town and the hot springs. Lots of different sites with power or without.

I've only stayed in the area twice and it was down the road at Fairmont Hot springs. Great CG with lots of amenities and no National Park fees either.

I agree with Redstreak. We spend a few days there every season, usually in August, but we've stayed over Victoria Day too. To add to the earlier post, yes, there are electrical sites, but also two loops of full hookups. Sweet.

Thanks for the ideas and comments so far!
Sounds like Redstreak is a good option. A quick look at the website reveals it is a National Park and is a first-come-first-served basis. Any thoughts/feedback about availability over the May long weekend?

Nevermind on the Redstreak availability... I just noticed that it is going to be reserveable over the May long weekend. Pretty much the rest of the season will be first-come first-served, but that particular weekend looks to be reserveable.
I've also put in an email to the Fairmont resort. Seems they are filling up but have some availability.
Any other favorites out there? Or 2nd favorites (as a backup plan)?
How about places to stay away from?
Still fishing for options and ideas.....

Reservations for the reservable campsites in the mountain national parks open around the begining of April. Reservations can be made for Redstreak all through the summer.

We like Redstreak too. Very clean and you can walk on a hiking trail down to the hot springs. Nice quiet family campground.
We also like Mountain Shadow which is a little further west. Click here Very comfortable. As well, Dutch Creek in Fairmont is also nice. Lots of space and clean. Click here
One place to avoid is Canyon Campground in Radium. Everyone is jammed together and they have more rules then you can imagine.

Another vote for Redstreak. It can get a little expensive if you don't have a park pass. It's an extra 18$/day on top of campground fees. Definitely reserve if you can. We showed up on a Tuesday before a long weekend last year and it was full.
We've also stayed at the above mentioned Canyon Campground, which we really enjoyed, but that was a while ago so things may have changed. Some sites in the trees are really nice and the creek is beautiful. There's also an awesome hike starting in the CG that leads you through the canyon to Sinclair Falls. I recommend the hike whether or not you stay there. You can hike to the falls from Redstreak it just takes a little longer.
Radium is great for kids. There's tons of mini golf, a couple of go-kart tracks and two really great beaches. The hot springs are wonderful, and the Radium springs have a warm pool for swimming. It's our favorite summer destination.
