I purchased my 5er from a wholesaler in Ohio, last summer. When doing the online order, one of the options was CSA certified. I order this!

Enough said! EH!

I just remembered, I got a sticker from Registrar of Imported Vehicles when all the paperwork was completed and approved, stating that my MH complies with all Canadian Standards. The dealer did the DRL (daytime running lights) as part of the deal. It is such an easy process to import from the US.

The sticker you got stated that it met Transport Canada requirements not CSA.
However that is all that is required to import.

That salesman was either a flat out LIAR (most likely) or else poorly advised or just plain stupid! If you've dealt with that dealer before and have been happy with them, I would go back to the dealers and ask for the MANAGER and tell him/her exactly what kind of a 'tale' you got from that salesman.
However, having said that, you may also get the same kind of 'attitude' from the manager..... such as 'well, we can't afford to work on ANY unit not bought here because that wouldn't leave us enough time to work on OUR customers' etc. etc..
As soon as I hear that line of Brown Sugar, I just tell them 'fine, you don't want my business, I'll go elsewhere, including for my next RV purchase!' That statement usually elicits a very different response.
We as consumers should always remember that these dealers would not be open if wasn't for us consumers that purchase their products and service!

One thing I would check is that the manufacturer actually does sell units in Canada or can build for Canadian standards. I know in my line of business which is flat deck trailers a lot of product built in the USA and imported into Canada does not meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and because in our line of products the only safety that must be performed is on Air Braking units - most of the US Manufacturers just put the required blurb on the serial number tag so that it passes Transport Canada requirements at the border. Where people get a big surprise is when the traffic cops stop them for improper lighting or improper braking requirements. Then the cheaper purchase made across the border is not so cheap anymore. In the world of Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards we quite often far exceed any of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards in the USA. One of the big things is the way propane lines are run for RV's and High End Horse Trailers with Living Quarters. The standards are way different for the two countries. I would not buy an RV in the USA unless it has the CSA approval from the manufacturer. Most reputable RV manufacturers will offer this as an option even when ordering from a US Dealer. But if you were buying one of the lot from a US dealer I would make sure that it had it's approval before bringing it into the country. Liability sometimes has a way of rearing it's ugly head.

Iceman, all towable Rv's are admissable into Canada, however you need to check on www.riv.ca to determine if a motorhome is, they list by manufacturer, model and year. That is who Canada Customs use to determine what is admissable. After it has been inspected a sticker is issued by RIV indicating that it does meet the Canadian Standards (not CSA)
Having said this I agree, if you are going to buy new why not have it built to CSA since the premium is minimal.

Unfortunately most and I say most Canadian dealers are still sticking to the old way of doing business on the pricing. We are in the process of down grading once again and going to a small light weight pull behind for summer week end camping with the Grand kids.It is so easy to check prices and MSRP stickers on any units any where,so armed with these facts boy you should see the stuttering and red faces when you spring that on the boys after they just swore that no one would beat their pricing.I am convinced that we a Canadians are hosed still again by the dealers not the manufactures.I found one and only one so far who said they sell at USA prices and will not lose a deal over the border. So far so good he will get my money,Ilike what he sells and his attitude. The whole market is coming down used and new,so tell Mr.Salesman warranty jerk some village some where is looking for him. This is the age of easy communications so use it.

I believe there is a lot of misinformation about the CSA thing going on.

The CSA (Canadian Standards Association) is a PRIVATE ORGANIZATION, that test good and certifies goods to standards THEY develop. None of these standards have any legal binding unless a federal or provincial legislature refers to a specific standard. If the provincial legislature of your province does not require CSA approval for registration of an RV you do not have to meet CSA Standards.

I copied the following from the CSA web page to the question if CSA Standards are the LAW:

Some standards are voluntary; others become mandatory in certain jurisdictions.

Standards organizations are not government bodies and so they do not have the power to make a standard mandatory. A standard only becomes law if a federal, state, regional, provincial, or municipal government references it in legislation.

Even if a standard is not mandatory, many organizations choose to comply in order to demonstrate their commitment to quality, performance or safety.

For more information of CSA please visit:

http://www.csa.ca/consumers/faq/?language=english

I hope this helps to understand what CSA actually is and what they do.

So go and get the Trailer and EVERYBODY save the money and stop the worries about that CSA STICKER

Funny, when I was looking and working with Traveland they told me all their rental units didn't have CSA because of the extra fees. I didn't check too carefully because we didn't end up buying but I'm not sure I'd believe a salesman at his sole word.....

The only inspection I think happens by hit-or-miss is in Ontario where they may insist the unit be inspected by Ontario Hydro (I have a sticker on the doorframe of my unit) to ensure it's to code and part of that inspection "may" be the inspector looking for the csa sticker on various appliances. I believe Matt is correct in every respect.

My understanding is some manufacturer's will "suggest" to dealers that they not "snipe" sales either way across the border but what the h--- was the NAFTA that got crammed up our collective @$&*$~ all about in the first place?
