AO,

Your "purifier" is about as good as it gets in unpowered units and does a good job, but if you've got power then the UVC is easy to do and kills all the critters.

Like I said the setup I posted has lots of "overkill" in it, The KDF and UVC are likely not needed in most places, but I figured I'd do the belt and suspenders thing.

How long would it take to fill your RV tank pumping that thing??

Mine is overkill for what I use it for. Like I said, I can drink the water untreated without any issues. Giardia is the only thing likely in the water, and I apparently don't have any problems with it. I drank the water from the same place we go every year until I tasted the water from one of my buddies first need filter. It tasted better so I bought one for the next trip.

And filling the RV?!?! Well, I can do a quart of water in about a minute or two, so figuring I can sustain the 2 minute rate (I can't) and assuming it's a 30 gallon tank (I have no idea what size it is), it would only take 4 hours. However, they claim that you filter via gravity. I tried it once and it didn't work. They have changed the instructions since then and I'll have to give it a try again. It might be possible to fill the RV tank via gravity in a only few days.

I've been trying to get my parents (and Aunts & Uncles) to pony up for a UV system for the place they all share in Napa. The link you gave has even better prices than when I last checked. What prefilter would you suggest? The water is coming from a well is "clear", just not considered safe to drink (dish washing has been fine).

AO,

I was told that the spun polypropylene filter take stuff down to a couple of microns out and are all that's needed ahead of UVC sterilizers for clear water. From what I've read and been told, the idea is to make sure the water is clear enough there is no shading, some say five microns is enough.

Guardia can turn nasty as you get older or if your system is weakened. Main thing for me is to not let some blasted bug or chemical ruin a trip.

Thanks. And hey, I'm with ya. If I were filling my RV tanks from any unknown source I'd want a system like yours. I wouldn't want to take a chance with the family's health.

Thanks again.

Hi Corky,

Here is a U of NM solar distiller that might be of interest to you. A really impressive unit for such a simple design.

T,
Thanks, I've seen two in operation and they are very impressive!!
Clean water in many places is harder to find than we're used to, we are really spoiled in this country. If I had a place I was going to be on a regular basis with good sun one of these solar stills would be high on my list of DIY projects.

There is an outfit here in San Diego that makes an inflatable solar still, I looked at them for RV use, but output is more in the survival range than camping use.

Fun read. I would like to have a simple gravity feed system. I do not need to filter large quantitys of water but would like an extra 40gals over the weenend and not have to carry it. Any ideas?

Thanks

iflych52,

I've seen some gravity filters by Berkley, but flow is limited, you still have to move the water into the filter system and the things removed are limited. I' really research and study before going for a simple gravity filter system.

I'll take some pictures post them, but it may take a week or so.
