Hello. This is not a cheerful topic but I'm hoping Good Sam members can help the family of a long-time fellow member who died unexpectedly last month at the age of 54. John was my best friend, and I'm trying to take some of the load off his family who are settling his "estate" by coming up with a plan to sell his camper and/or pickup truck. I am not really RV savvy and hope your collective experience can steer me in the right direction.
I see Good Sam has classified ads. That's a definite, I guess, because he talked about Good Sam all the time. Are there other places that an ad should be placed? The family asked me about eBay but I didn't think that was the right avenue at first. Do you agree? Any tips for getting the most out of John's investment? I know the economy stinks right now, which makes it all the more important to do this sad thing right.
Without going into many details, he bought a 2005 slide-out camper with pretty much all the bells & whistles. John was a meticulous caretaker of his stuff so the camper is immaculate and hasn't been used all that much. I think it went out of Wisconsin once and I was with him. The truck is a later 1990s dually turbodiesel with something like 80,000 miles; other than a tailgate dent it's also in perfect shape. I don't know if people ever buy these things together, or how to proceed.
Anyway, any help/suggestions/tips/cautions would be most helpful. Thanks in advance. I think John was BORN wanting an RV and finally got it a couple years ago. At least he got his wish, I guess, however short it was.

Sorry to hear your news, you might start at www.craigslist.org, it is one of the places you can list for free I think. Make sure to include some decent pictures. I have seen both package deals (camper with pickup) and separate. Some ads offer a reduced price if purchased together. Good luck.

RV.net has a classified section you can post on. I would try to sell the two together if possible. You should have a local camper trader/sale book available at most stores you can also post in. Just make sure you have cash in hand before titles are transferred that means check have cleared the bank. I would only use eBay as a last resort.

Another option...contact a local dealer and see if they will sell it on consignment. Usually the dealer will keep 10% of selling price and the seller gets the balance of the proceeds.
I'm sorry for your loss. My Dad passed away in June and my Mama had to sell their travel trailer. (She wouldn't use it without him.)
I wish you the best...

Thank you all who responded! There are some great ideas I hadn't thought of. Trying to help out the family, who are 500 miles away from me (I'm in Ohio, they're Wisconsin) is tough enough. Things like furnace BTUs, generator capacity, etc. will need to go into ad copy so they have some work to do "up there" not the least of which is getting it out of storage and having some good pictures taken. Just wish the economy was a tad better!
