Mike and I are British Citizens and are trying to get our heads around the TAG renewals in the USA. We have a motorhome and TOAD registered and insured in Florida and hold Florida driving licences. The TAG and drivers licence are due to run out in September 08. The insurance is until March 08. We are unlikely to be in Florida at that time. So how do we renew if we can't go in to the office personally? We have Florida driving licences as this saves a bit on the insurance. Are there any other non US travellers out there who can give us some advice? We can't be the only ones. We are planning on staying here for a year by going up to Canada to renew our I94s. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

You *should* be able to renew your vehicle licenses via the Internet or mail. That may be true of driver's licenses, too. I'm not familiar with the laws of Florida, but some states, like Texas, allow renewal of both vehicle and driver's licenses via mail. South Dakota, however, requires a personal appearance for the renewal of driver's licenses.

Hopefully, someone with Florida experience will be along shortly to give you first-hand information.

This taken from the Florida drivers licence
website.....doesn't mention foreign citizens, but call and ask

Renewing Out of State

If you're temporarily out of the state and your driver license or ID card is due to expire, you can renew online (as mentioned above), or contact the Customer Service Center via e-mail or at (850) 617-2000. If you contact the service center before your card expires, you will be eligible to receive a 90-day temporary permit, which will be mailed to you along with renewal instructions.

We are Florida residents and fulltime RVers. We renew our driver's license & license plates/registration on line. Even when we lived in a "real" house, we renewed on-line, just to avoid a trip to the DMV office.

This website should help you Florida DMV Website

In the past, when I was a Florida resident, I was able to renew DL and tags on line or by mail and have them mailed to out-of-state address (or to in-state mailing service).

BTW, if tags were mailed to other than mailing address in computer for DL, the accompanying printed registration would have the address actually mailed to on it. Got confusing in WA one time when pulled over with Florida tags but WA address on registration. I told officer that FL told me that tags in computer would have mailed-to AND DL address; he checked and they were both there.

Things may have changed, however, with new Homeland Security measures. I do know that after a certain number of years, FL wanted a personal visit to DL office for new photo.

Driving licenses and vehicle registrations should be easily done by internet or by US Mail. Your insurance should also be no problem to do by mail.

Let me suggest that you might find this page by some countrymen of yours to be helpful. They have owned an RV in the USA now for more than four years.

Kirk, thanks for doing that site. I've posted the link on several other RV groups where that kind of question comes up.

BTW,here's some info on Real ID and Florida:
