I've read several times that if you leave your TT plugged in it can over charge the battery if it doesn't have a good on board charger. My question is how do you know what kind of charger is being used. I have a 2008 Jayco 22FB. Does anyone know if it will over charge the battery?

That is correct....been there done that. Now I have the TT on a timer what runs 2 hrs per day. There is a mod you can do to the converter that solves the problem....so I'm told but I'v not done that as I can't figure out how to get to the converter.

Could you point me to the place where I could find this information? I just replaced the battery in my Jayco and don't want to burn it out too quickly...

Thanks.

Check what converter you have. I think it might be an IOTA converter.

If it is an IOTA and has the provision you can add the IQ Smart Controller.

IOTA Converters
IQ Smart Charger

Many OEM installed IOTAs do not have the provision to add the IQ.
IMO it is far better to replace the IOTA straight across for a capable model with IQ rather than using any separate battery charger. If it is new maybe the dealer would do the swap at a reasonable price but it is not technically hard for anyone that can connect a battery.

Jayco does use the IOTA. My problem is I have no idea how to get at it. It's under the fridge with no obvous means of access.

Hmmm, reminds me of trying to work on a Mercedes....you can see it but that's all.

---------------------

I've heard this story also going around BUT, what about all those people that stay down South for 5 to 6 months every winter??
They all leave their trailers pluged in without any problems??

We were in S.E. Texas this winter for 6 weeks and no one even mentioned ever having a battery overcharge problem. And I can verify that there are literally tens of thousands of Snowbirds down there every year.

Happy trails,

So I have a 2005 Jayco and indeed it does use the IOTA converter/charger. Unfortunately Jayco does not spend the extra money on the converter that will allow for the IQ Smart Controller. I called IOTA and discussed this in length with one of their engineers. He did inform me that this converter will NOT over charge and boil the batteries. I leave my TT plugged in to shore power when I am not camping and have not had a single problem.

Since you have a 2008 I would call Jayco Tech support and ask them what the model number is for the converter and then in turn call IOTA (do a google search) and discuss your particular converter with them. They are really great people to work with, very friendly and knowledgeable.

I have an 06 Jayco with an IOTA converter/charger that will take the Smart Controller mod, but I don't see a need for it. I leave my rig plugged in full time and add very little water every year.

We're talking about Travel Trailers here. Jayco does not use the converters in their TTs that will accept the IQ Smart Controller. The plug is missing from the converter to be able to attach it.

All the Jayco's I looked at on a nearby dealer's lot last week had converter/chargers in them that had large stickers on the front, advertising the fact that they now had 'Three Stage Chargers'...which gives you 1. bulk battery charging 2. finishing charge 3. float charge to keep batteries fully charged at proper voltage without overcharging, as in the past.

Check out Best Converter for converter/charger update kits if you have an older, single stage charger. I found a 55 Amp model for my Lance and expect to extend the life of our batteries without worry of water loss and overcharging.
