Those aren't retread rubber you are seeing, thats the steel belt in a modern radial truck tire.

A rookie mistake to assume that.

The rubber from a retread is vulcanized to the rubber in the casing, they do not separate.

You can use a retread on the front steering axle, the old wives tale about not being able to is from the early early early days when they used heat to cure the rubber, they dont do that anymore but the old law is still on the books, but that law only pertained to Buses that carried passengers, not over the road trucks.

I've run retreads in the past, I have yet to have one aligator on me.

And I bet you actually checked tire pressures regularly, and you didn't run overloaded.

Cost has nothing to do with it for me...Treadwright tires are that good. Cost has nothing to do with why I run them--I will run them on my truck as long as they are available. They are that good.

I wouldn't do it, thought of the tread flying off when I am at hwy speeds toting my trailer just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy.

Re-TREADed? No, Re-MOLDED? yes! google bandag and green diamond. BOTH are proven re-molded tire companies. Remolded actually rebuilds the tread area the same way as the factory original, re-treaded just glues a new tread on. (think I said that right)

Right, the only part on your vehicle that could kill you and your loved ones if it fails and you want a retreaded version.

They are not legal on the front axle so you would have to be the world's biggest idiot to put them on the rear axle of a tow vehicle to tow the family trailer with the family.

Not if I was the guy who never checked tire pressure and then ran down the road towing an overweight trailer at speeds that exceed the rating of the tire. Since I am not that guy I run retreads on the drive axel and virgin rubber on the steers. I probably will never have to replace any of these tires unless they check too badly in about 7 or 8 years.

Again, you are incorrect and just parroting a popular myth.

Retreads are legal on the front axle.

Q. What are the regulations regarding the use of retreads on steering axles?
A. This is an issue that confuses many people. A misconception exists that retreads are not allowed on the steering axle of any vehicle. The fact is, retreads can be used on the steering axle on any vehicle with the exception of a bus. Paragraph "d" of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation Title 49 Part 393.75 states, "No bus shall be operated with regrooved, recapped or retreaded tires on the front wheels."

Troy is right: They are perfectly legal in front. I run them in front (2 different trucks), the wreckers Liz drives have them in front.

The people bleating about the evils of retreads are simple ignorant.

I have a Jeep that I trailer to and from the trail. I might would consider re-treads on it, but not for my daily driver.
