I second earlier comment. I'd pull the engine and transmission and replace both with a Jasper engine & transmission. It's not smart to replace one without the other especially with that many miles. They have a warrenty and are good products. You could do both for 10-20% of the cost of a new truck. Plus your insurance will be lower since it's not a new vehicle and if you don't have a payment that leaves more cash for camping and buying food since those prices are going up too.

a engine is much cheaper then buying a new one and haveing a payment book for the next few years as long as its still in good shape they tend to rot out here befor they wear out.

If the rest of the Suburban is in good shape, I'd put a new motor in it

I'd go with a new engine and trans also, much cheaper than new truck payments.

If you "Really" like your old burb put a new engine/tranny in it, that is if the rest is in great shape. Say you just put new brakes on it, re did the AC system etc.

Sans the above, its a great time to get a new rig. Guilt free, as the old burb owes you nothing at this point.

Heck...what about a low-mile engine from a wreck?

With all the calcium chloride they use up here, I'd give the undercarriage a good lookover before putting any $ into the project. Folks in some other parts of the country might not realize the toll winter driving takes on our vehicles.

My 2 cents.

so what happened to the motor - they usually don't just say you gotta replace me out of the clear blue If I loved the vehicle, I would drop a crate motor in. or a short block something or other.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts... DH is a heavy equipment mechanic, so we're quite familiar with what's involved and what we need the Ol' Burb to do for us performance-wise. Anyway, the body/interior are in great shape, I loved it so much I took immaculate care of it. But, yes, here in New England the undercarriage/paint can take a beating during the winter. Little bit of rust on the fenders/hood. For the cost and time for DH to do an engine swap (I mentioned some of the suggestions here on this forum, and he will not do anything but 100% new on the engine and all related components) It is not worth it for us, but the truck may serve someone else's needs just fine that way. It still has 219K and is a tired baby, shakey at 65mph and creaky. We knew the time was coming and had been shopping around the past 6 months. We bought a 2005 Chevy Silverado short bed crew cab, which is excellent. We tow a 28BHS as well as a 21 ft SeaRay, so we need a fresh TV. Again, thank you for your suggestions to keep the burb, but my OP was mostly intended to vent my sadness at the time coming to say goodbye to a good truck I thought there might be others out there who are attached to their trucks that could relate. Happy camping!
