I have a 2009 Heartland Sundance and just finished my 3rd weekend of camping. Upon getting home Sunday and dropping it in the driveway, I heard a strange noise from the front jacks as I was raising off the hitch. I looked and the electric motor had twisted 180 degrees and the plastic cover that covers the gear by the motor was shattered. I turned it back 180 degrees with my hand and had my wife push the button while I held the motor to prevent it from turning back.
It looks like the motor is kept in place by two plastic rods off the gear cover in the front. Those rods are on either side of the square tubing and just their presence is what holds the motor in place. Needless to say, both plastic rods easily broke under the torque of the motor.
Anyway, I called Lippert and they are sending me the new plastic piece (transmission) for the motor and I will put it on. How easy is it to replace? I will look at it tonight, but was wondering if I should hook it up to the truck to get the weight off the landing gear? Has anyone had this problem before and done the repair? Any tips?

I would let the selling dealer repair it. Has to be under warranty. If you mess with it can that void your warranty?

Better to have it repaired under warranty. If you do decide to do it yourself, I would hook up to truck to be on safe side.

Dealer is 180 miles away from where it sits. Lippert is sending me the part direct.

Call Lippert, a tech can help you install it...they are very good about that.

I agree with above...... if it's a 2009 like you say it should be under warranty. I don't care how easy it could be to replace, let the dealer do it under warranty. This way if something goes wrong they can't claim it was caused by your inexperience. Just the fact that your asking others how to install this tells me you shouldn't do it yourself if you have to ask! Just my opinion!

Lets see, 180 miles one way, 360 round trip, roughly 10 mpg = 36 gal. times $4.50/gal. = $162 plus 6 hours driving time! It seems remotely possible that moloyelo may know what he's doing.

If it's just the gear box and drive motor that you're removing, I don't see why you would need to hitch it to the truck.
Go ahead and do the job yourself. You'll just get some needed experience that you will need as an owner of an rv.
If the manufacturer is sending you the parts postpaid, why spend your time and money taking it to the dealer.

You read my mind. I called the dealer and they told me what to do. Said it should take less than 30 minutes. I looked it over pretty good last night and it does not appear to be rocket science. I just wanted to be sure about how it works before I get the new part and tear into it.
And just because I asked, does not mean I do not know what I am doing. That is why the forum works.
I'll report back after I get the part and finish the job.

I don't think It'd be too difficult. I would hook it up to the truck just to make sure that the braking system isn't compromised.
