To stay late or not that is the question. sorry had to be a little poetic. Asking permission is the 'right' thing to do if you are talking about a few hours. if you are going to be 10 or 20 mins later then it would take you longer to ask then to just do it. For a few hours I'd always get permission, if we were talking about hotel room that you refused to leave and/or just hung around you'd have the cops called on you and/or be charged for a full nights stay.
Which brings me to an interesting point. Why is there so much time between check out and checking? Most places say out by 11am and no one can come in till 3. What is the logic for the 4 hours? I am sure there are a few places who do (or some cases where they need to) but i have never seen a CG maintenance staff cleaning empty camp sites.

Shannone, thanks for the great reply! I will ask the Mgr of the campground about it when I call to make reservations and pay for next weekend. They are all really nice people to deal with and I'm sure they will be accommodating.
I have seen your posts in the past and they are always helpful and informative.
Happy camping!

The point being that by coming in late friday night, he did not use the electricty or facilities for 4 or 5 hours that the person that came in at 12 or 1 P.M. used. So if he stayed a couple of hours after check out that use would balance out. Just a thought.

OK - I can almost follow the logic on this - but going back to what a previous poster said, how would this be viewed if we were talking about a room in hotel? I can't imagine a circumstance where talking to the campground management wouldn't be the most ethical approach. And I'm as lazy as the next person - it just takes a couple of seconds to make a cell phone call from the campsite.

Reread your original post. I based my comments on what you wrote and the attitude you seemed to convey. You: asked if others paid for overtime, were critical of the rules or their lack of enforcement, said some things were stupid, and the kicker: " They don't spell out a fee for that 4 free hours of camping I beat them out of".
It seemed that you already made up your mind but wanted to support your position by looking for support here.
We don't have a problem with check out time.
I wrote what I felt and didn't consider my replies "slick".
By The Way, I know what TSP is (Tri-Sodium Phosphate), what's "P.S.P"?

Most of the time we pull out an hour before check out. Many times we have pulled in at check in time to still have some camper in the spot. Only one time a camper got upset with us for coming at check in time, they had not finished loading up. We told them it was fine we would wait up the hill. Not our fault the park ranger gave us the site. It is just like a hotel you get out. Or pay as I have done for an extra day to leave out later.

Pennsylvania State Police.........one persons rules are another persons vehicle code.
This whole post is getting twisted around from it's original intent.
I did like like guy that figured out the relevance to checking in 4 hours late and leaving 4 hours late. Beers are on me!

Traxtermax, I agree with you completely. The attitude in the responses didn't strike the nerve in me that the original post did.
Fuzzbutt, your comment about being "hit up" for more money was objectionable to me. Choosing to follow the rules you like and then leaving the campsite cleaner than you found it doesn't really make it okay to intentionally and frequently stay significantly longer than you paid for. They may appreciate your repeat business and they may not ever confront you about your habits - but it's entirely possible they say unflattering things as you're waving good-bye. My comments may be difficult for you to hear - but that doesn't make it "flaming."

It's possible, if you mostly camp on weekends, that you wouldn't see them often. Sunday-Thursday, at the CGs we frequent, this is the time they mow the lawn, water, rake, etc. At most Washington State parks, the (good) hosts go to each campsite as it opens up and clean out the fire pit, pick up trash, pet leavings, and check out the utility fixtures to make sure everything is in working order.
During summer months, we have arrived at our reserved site early, found it empty, and been told we would have to wait until the watering was completed. No argument from us, since we were early...

Most of the time we are out of the CG by checkout time, however I have some rental houses about two hours away from home and when we have to do work on them we camp at a KOA nearby. On every occasion we needed to stay late I have gone to the office before closing on Saturday evening, asked if staying late would be an issue and I always ask how much I owe for staying late. BTW we always have one of their best sites. I have never been charged anything, they have always been very gracious and polite about letting us stay. I never assume they owe me the extra time and I always express my thanks for their consideration. They do not have the best CG around (although they are working on it constantly) but I feel valued as a customer and I always go back.
