What they don't tell you is that you have to put the small tank in the freezer and you won't be able to fill it very full, perhaps only 10% or 20%.
At one time the larger tank could be turned upside down and liquid would flow into the small tank. That has been eliminated by a safety check valve in the new tanks.
A much better alternative is to use a adapter hose to go from a one or five gallon refillable tank directly to the appliance. That eliminates the quart sized tanks. JMHO
On edit, I'm retracting my comments above based on Big Kahuna's remarks. I believe my assumptions are in error. Apparently the small tanks can be refilled using the newer tanks with the new valves.

And they also don't tell you it is a Federal offense to transport a refilled container. $25,000 fine and five years prison per 49USC-1809. OK, so that is the law - has anyone ever been ticketed?

How would anyone be able to tell if a qt. container had been refilled?
BTW I think this is something like the warning on mattress tags, it's only illegal for dealers/resellers to refill.
My BBQ tanks will put out liquid when inverted, I just bought them last year.
The have overfill devices inside the tank, but they don't seem to affect anything
when exhausting the tank, I use the liquid for a torch/icemelter to get big, bright flames.

I refill 1 lb tanks all the time. You can fill them to 80% no problem; just open the vent. You do not have to chill them. You can also turn the newer tanks upside down and they will fill the tank fine. Obviously you have never tried it. I have been refilling one pound tanks for years without issue. I date the tanks and recycle them after a few years; friends give me their empties. My refiller is more complex; it has a longer copper pipe with a valve and is bent so you can situate the small tank easier.
And its against the law because Coleman has paid off politicians like everything else. Next someone will tell me its dangerous to ride a horse without a saddle.

I just used mine the other day, and like Big Katuna, I was very satisfied with the results. I did put my little tanks in the freezer first as I read somewhere on this forum to do so, and it worked as advertised. Can you imagine being thrown in jail for something as silly as this? As the shaved headed, tattooed neo nazi approaches you and asks....."So what are you in for?........."

I've been using this device for years as well. Got mine at Harbor Freight for a little less $$$. We have a little buddy heater and it goes through these small bottles quickly. I refill about ten at a time when we are boondocking in late Fall. If you check for leaks after the fill, you should be fine. I have had a couple of bottles go bad (develop leaks, always on them main valve and not the overflow). I've gone to storing refilled bottles in the back of the pickup just to be safe. I also put a mark on the bottle each time I refill it. I throw them out after five refills. So far that has stopped me from getting leaks. Surprisingly, the leaks have always happened in the Coleman bottles. So I try to use the generics whenever possible.

At one time they made 1lb tanks that you could refill look for the hex nut on the vent valve.
