Evidently it doesn't close when its upside down. I refill routinely from the newer style tank. DrMaserati does too.
Thanks, I hadn't looked into the operation of the OPD. Since it's a float, that makes perfect sense.

filled a bunch last night. i don't vent them either and get them quite close to full. i use opd 20 pounders no problem.
a trick while camping to chill the bottle. is to run it on a propane device on high. my 1 heater will ice a tank in 5 minutes, and will allow a ton more propane

I bought the refill valve about 6 months ago. probably the best $16.99 I have spent in a long time. The 1lb cylinders are filled to the same pressure as the 20lb tanks, so when you are filling the 1lb cylinders, there is no way to overfill them when you follow the instructions.

Hi All.
Well, first of all, I haven't used the small 1 lb bottles for years now. And we also have a Mr Heater, and a Wave #6 Propane Heater as well. We just use a spare 20 lb'er Propane Tank to use either Heater, with a different regulator, high pressure for the Mr Heater,( direct to the 20 lb'er) and a low Pressure regulator for the Wave #6 Propane Heater and use it as a portable unit. I got rid of the old Coleman Camp Stove and Lantern that used the Coleman White Gas, as it was getting to cost more and more all the time. I went to a Coleman Multi-Fuel Camp Stove, and a Multi-Fuel Lantern, and have never looked back. The Multi-Fuel Stove and Lantern, are so much better than the older Coleman Camp Stoves and Lanterns. The Multi-Fuel Camp Stove Burns much hotter, and the Lantern is at least twice as bright as the old White Gas Fuel ones. The only Propane equipment that we still have left for out-side use, is our Propane BBQ, and we use the 20 lb'er for that also. Since we need to carry gas for our Twin Honda's anyways, it has worked out very well for us to get rid of the 1 lb bottle users. Good Luck. Happy Camping, Dan & Jill

OPD is Overfill Protection Device, (rant) which is (in my opinion) political pandering at its best. Some congress-critter's brother in law had a gadget that didn't sell so let's pass a law making it mandatory! Another solution in search of a problem. (/rant). It's not a tipOver Protection Device. As others have noted, the bottles flow just fine when tipped over.

RJsfishin wrote: At the filling stations, they open the bleeders only to prevent overfilling in the case that the OPD doesn't shut it off at 80%. There is no need to ever open a bleeder valve on an OPD equipped tank, as it will fill just as fast when using a pump. The pump just stops when the OPD shuts off. However most filling station attendents don't even know that,....till I tell'm.
Thanks for this explanation. I've been finding that more and more filling stations aren't messing with the bleeder valve. I honestly thought they were just being lazy and was a little concerned that maybe my bottles were being overfilled. Of course, overfilling was an occasional problem prior to the OPD. Thinking about it now, I can't remember an overfill since the switch to OPD. Would that mean that using an OPD equipped 20 lb bottle in an RV would be safe (since it can't be overfilled)? I remember on another thread that the consensus was that it wasn't safe. Yes, yes, I know that there is still potential for a leaky connection. But would it be safe assuming the connections didn't leak?
Good to see that common sense has prevailed on this thread. How long do you think this $17 device would be on the market if people were actually being hurt or killed by refilling 1 lb bottles? I got mine about five years ago, so it doesn't sound like things are going kaboom very often.

We have always use 20 - 30 lb bottles in closed shop areas etc, and all the Osha and fire codes allowed it also, even before OPD valves. But I would never tell anyone that they safe to use in living quarters, house or RV, even tho I have used them for heat in living quarters in past years,....when we were boycotting Ca PG&Es outragous gas prices several years ago.

My thanks to Big Katuna and others who pointed out that the overfill protection device valve doesn't prevent liquid propane from spilling out and that the transfer tool will work. I was mistaken. Live and learn.

I love these posts - every time it surfaces all the naysayers and Interstate transfer warnings surface Right - and I have NEVER removed any of those tags from my mattresses either ...
I - - like Big Katuna have been refilling 1 pound cylinders for years, even decades, and it works fine... Put the #1 bottle in the freezer overnight, turn the #20 tank upside down and refill... You'll get near a perfect fill every time...
It's cheap and it works!!!

It has all been said, but I have to add "It works and I do it regularly." I vent nothing and, judging by weighing the small cylinder, I manage to get nearly a full refill. But remember to attach a ground line to your waist and turn off your cell phone.................
