I leave the H2O in till I need to drain off some as more ice is added. I keep a cooler in the garage at home that always has H2O/ice for drinks while outside or working in the yard...drinks stay much cooler.
One reason to drain water is to place in a 5 gal bucket or a smaller cooler to 'prechill' warm drinks before restocking the cooler. If you have a portable ice maker, use the ice cold melt water to make more ice....it freezes quicker.

I dunno. IMHO: This is a very serious disagreement over ice and is without fail definite grounds for divorce. I'd chunk the cooler, sell the RV, and call the lawyers. Or, you could buy 2 coolers and you can each control ice your own way, buy a new RV with an ice maker already built into it and eliminate the cooler altogether, and tell the lawyers you've reconciled.

Think about it, you have water because its warmer than the ice.
The warmer water will cause the remaining ice to melt faster.

If you read the instructions that comes with an Xtreme Marine cooler by Coleman it says to leave the slushy ice in the cooler. It's the best cooler BTW, I've tried them all.

Well I guess Igloo, Coleman, and Rubbermaid have it wrong then. All three in their instruction booklets say to leave the melt water. Water at 32 degrees still has a LOT of BTU cooling potential over air that will replace the removed water.

Leave the water if it will not damage food items in the cooler.
Air in contact with the ice will melt it faster than water in contact with the ice. This info is from the cooler manufacturers. Read the paper that came with the cooler.

so the best bet would be to cool down the drinks/ items in the water/ ice combo and then once cooled, drain the water and add more ice !

Exactly, if you remove the water the cooler will contain more (warm) air. The air will melt the ice faster

The water has nothing to do with the ice melting. It is the heat loss through the cooler that causes the ice to melt. The higher the heat loss the faster the ice melts, regardless whether the water is drained or not.

I have a confession: I let melted ice (AKA WATER) in my cooler. There I said it, it feels as if a huge burden has just been lifted from me.
Technically, its considered gray water. Dumping it out may or may not be illegal and/or a health hazzard.
OK, EASY EVERYONE! just kidding.
