I am currently rebuilding and adding surge brakes to a Demco tow dolly to use this season. My question is that I placed good 205/75/R14 (radial tires) to bring it home to start the work on it. When I was ording my brake parts the salesperson asked me what I was using for tires. I told him "car tires" and he stated to get those tires off immediatly because they would blow with the weight of a car on them. He added since they are 4 ply and max air pressure is 35psi that I need to move to a trailer tire 6 ply at 50 psi. There would be a lot less flex on the sidewalls and they would not heat up. That makes totally sense for a trailer, but since it is only a Honda Accord on the dolly they are normal "car" tires on the dolly where is the extra weight and heat coming from? The weight of the dolly is roughly 500lbs. Does this make sense or should I just move up to a "Trailer tire"?

I bought a brand new Demco tow dolly in 1999. Fully galvanized model with surge brakes, direct from the factory. Weighs a total of just under 900 lbs. I have been running car tires on it since new, as recommended by the manufacturer. Not the first problem. I think somebody just wants to sell you some high-buck tires!

First, he's stupid. There are no tires with six plies of cord in the sidewalls, and the only tires with four plies are super stiff off road racing tires. You'll find tires with two or three plies, and that's good.

What he said about trailer tires having stiffer sidewalls and being able to handle unique towing loads is true, but maybe unnecessary in your usage.

The real question is: Are the tires you are using rated for the weight of the dolly and vehicle weight that is on the dolly. If they are no problem, if they are not there will be a problem. Today, tomorrow, next month? Most 205 car tires have a capacity of around 1500 lbs at max inflation, as I recall.

just remember if you blow a tire on a dolly towing a car it can get real exciting real quick---dolly tires are not that much more then car tires anyway. I just bought 2 and I think I only paid $100 for a tire and rim and $75 for just a tire--I think there is more to it then just the weight issue
