I was making a diesel run last Friday to fill up my GMC Sierra 2500 in Tijuana, one mile from the Otay port of entry. I spotted a 38" DP a couple trucks behind me. He was alone & was obviously only making a diesel run. I thought it was pretty gutsy as traffic is usually heavy in this commercial part of town, also the return border wait can be excruciating at times. This day the border wait was only about 45 minutes. Because of the low cost of diesel in Mexico I am beginning to see many more US PU's almost all with auxiliary fuel tanks making diesel runs but this is the first DP I have seen. I've thought about taking my 40'DP down there but don't know if the $300 saving is worth the aggravation. Is anyone else taking their DP's into Mexico SOLELY for the purpose of topping off their tanks?

There is not that much difference between you MH and the one you saw there so it should not be that bad. Maybe a big auxiliary tank and a transfer pump is the way to go. A couple of trips in the pick-up and transfer to the MH. Maybe just 55 gallon drums.

You can't use anything but an installed aux tank in your truck and the factory installed main tank. Also beware you are input in the computer data bank every time you cross back into the states and tracked. They are watching for people who are not using the fuel for personal use plus other stuff. No drums or cans are allowed. No tanks mounted in trailers. I don't know about a transfer tank compared to an aux. tank. Because we cross over every couple of weeks, they let us know they are aware of our lasting crossing. Good luck!

I worked in Mexicali for two years and had a rental in Calexico and I would cross the border sometimes 4 times a day(i would cross over for lunch. Not once was I questioned about how many crossings I was doing. Even if they do track it I wonder if they really care.

Nogales is a much larger port with greater traffic and I was talking about driving across, not walking. It has been only in the last two years the agents started mentioning anything about crossing. Nothing has ever been said when I rarely walk across. Give them time especially with the new reader on the passport. First they input my vehicle license plate and then swipe my passport before they even ask me what the purpose of the trip was. They care!

Thanks for the heads up. I actually would drive across each time not walk but that was almost 3 years ago. Now I just do my San Felipe trips during the winter and maybe only cross twice a month. Maybe one positive thing to come from this will be the wait times in line trying to get back across

YNOTRIDE, sadly wait times have not improved. I have a Mexican friend who has a work visa for the States. He was telling me this last week the crossing times doubled for some reason. He felt they were looking for someone or something. I will be going over next week with the truck so will be able to update personally as he walks across. Truck is nearly empty and beans, coffee and beef are low.

An update for anyone wanted to purchase diesel fuel in Tijuana, BC,. As of Tuesday, the 17th almost all the Pemex stations in Tijuana were out of Diesel fuel. Don't know what the situation is in other border towns but in TJ it is not pretty. For weeks drivers from the US have snapped up Mexican diesel fuel, in some cases truckers were crossing daily filling up 300+ gallon tanks & reselling it in the US. Many stations are out of gasoline also. As of today it appears public bus service may be halted as a result of the fuel shortage. New supplies are not suppose to arrive until Monday. Word will be coming down soon from Mexico City as to changes being implemented as a result of the "abuses". I made a diesel run last Friday & had to go to four Pemex stations before I was able to purchase fuel. Two told me they had fuel but were only selling to longtime commercial accounts.
More to follow!

They should build more service stations and keep pumping the cheap fuel.
