I need information on calling the U.S. while traveling through canada to Alaska.
Is there certain cell companies that provide coverage?
What is the cost and availability of public pay phones?

Our cell service charges $.69 per minute in Canada. We're using a Skype phone. It works where we have a good Internet system. It works with a PC or Laptop and uses its speakers and microphone, but we prefer a USB Skype phone you purchase from Wal-Mart for about $30. Skype phone charges about $.025 per minute in the US and Canada, and $.06 in Alaska.

I don't know who your phone provider is but why not check with them? If you are with AT&T they have a toll free phone home service. I expect other carriers will have similar services.
AT&T direct
We use Canada Direct when we are out of the country. That gives us access to our home phone service plans. The toll free call from whevever we are back to Canada is free. YMMV.

i signed up for skypes also.
it's wonderful!
3 ways to use it:
1) with another computer who also uses skype.
this is a no charge feature. works great. can use video and see other person
2) skype out: $2.95/month. no contract required. you can call UNLIMITED canada to usa and vice versa. also works great. i have been speaking with my elderly mom in florida regularly and for long times...no problem.
3) incoming skype: $24.00 (i think) for 12 months. you get a phone number (and have the ability to select the area code of your choice). thus, people can call you (and you even get voice mail).
so, with all these features, i have been able to contect to friends and family any time i have internet access.
it has really made being 'in the wildnerness' quite easy.
most cg's in canada have wifi (some reach the sites, some are in the office only, and only a very few cg's charge a fee, otherwise it's free).
hope all this helps...

I got a calling card from my telephone company so i just need to recite the number when calling from any pay phone, the charges are then billed to my monthly bill.

I have Verizon for my cell and I have not had to do anything different to call from Canada. Just dial as normal.

We have Sprint. When we went to Ontario last July I called Sprint and they added Canada coverage for $4.95 a month. When we returned we canceled that coverage. We had no problems.

On this side of the country you can go in to a big box store in Canada and purchase a calling card, which will work well and will cover your calls while you're here.

I've seen pay phones about every place we've been. I have no idea what they cost to use.
