The drug problem was acclerated by Viet Nam. Ho Chi Minn said he would destroy America by providing cheap drugs to our servicemen when they were in Viet Nam. They would then get addicted and take their problem back to America. His plan was implemented and truefully, very successful.

Y'know, I hear this a lot, but I never saw drugs (other than beer) while I was in 'Nam. I didn't know anybody who used drugs in my unit, never heard anything about drugs from any of the units around us. Like many things "reported" by the media, I have to wonder how much was blown out of proportion, and how much was fabricated for the pleasure of the viewers...

If one considers that one was dragged instead of drug to church, the initial post becomes an exercise in frivolity.

Mowermech I agree with you those of us that were in combat as opposed to just in country were not about to dull our senses by taking drugs unless we had a death wish

Actually.. I know for a fact that there was a "Drug Problem" in the united states back when I was still too young to know (personally) about such things (I have done research)

What we have today is instant nation wide communications.. For example today I read of some kids suing the school because the football coach kicked them off the team for saying "I hate the coach and don't want to play for him"

Uh, do you see the issue here.. He said "If you don't want to play for me.. Get off the team" so they sue him.. Makes real sense

Now. fact is when I was oh, say 10 years old I'd have never seen that story. Don't mean it could not have happened then.. Just means that I'd not have seen it because the story, which is set in Kentuckey, would never have made Michigan news papers and was not big enough for Walter Cronkite to cover on the national news.

But today I hear about any drug bust which is out of the ordinary anywhere in the world through the magic of the internet.. And a lot of other stories that are of the "You got to be kidding" class (I actually have news crawlers that search them out in case you are wondering, and aggregation sites one of which is GROXX Google if you want it)

But when I was in elementary school drug pushers came through our small town, They made no sales, but they tried. Bank Robbers came through (They got away with 20 years..No money but they got 20 years free room and board.. Pine I think)

And of course.. Teens have been getting drunk (Alcohol is a drug) and smoking (Tobacco,or rather nicotine is a drug) for longer any living soul can remember.. I was offered booze as a teen.. Declined (It tastes TERRIBLE to me) but it was offered.

What has happened is two fold

One is the sharing of informaiton is greater.. See the above comments on stories spreading like wildfire.. So we are more aware of drug problems

The second is that there is a general reduction in respect.. As the OP said

"I got drug off to the woodshed"

Today.. There are few woodsheds but we older folks knwo what he really meant.. And if you do that to some well deserving backside... you go to jail for child abuse.

And in some states.. If you don't you go to jail for child neglect (The crimes of the child are vested upon the father)

There is no way for a parent to win!

One can fight the "drug war" all you want. It can never be overcome in today's society. Americans are always looking for the magic pill to do anything and everything..... Weight loss, depression, hyperactivity, sore muscles, nutrition, strength.....etc, etc. You name it, there is a drug and/or a pill to take care of it. You can educate, till you are blue in the face. Almost every medicine cabinet in America has something in it. For every tv commercial about "this is your brain on drugs", there is 10 more on how to make you feel better, even though the side effects, will make you drowsy, dizzy, give you cramps, headaches, etc etc.
And these millions of people are driving daily, and are making our products, drivers for our public transportation, etc etc. The real drug problem isn't just the junkies or their type.
I had a heart attack about 5 years ago, I can tell you first hand what some of those drugs do.
So, I guess what I am saying is......This country is dependant on DRUGS..... It won't end anytime soon.

Is it any wonder we have a drug problem in this country?
On just about every corner in the City, you have flashing Neon signs saying, Drugs, Drugs! Get your drugs here.

But the movies always show the drug use and we know Hollywood wouldn't exagerate something like that..
