I just got a new Northern Tool catalog in the mail. They list a 1000 watt Honda wannabe. It's lighter, runs longer, quieter, and less money. Thinking of ordering one today.

My strong recommendation is don't do it. Y'konw how it goes, "you get what you pay for"! This is a textbook example....and for about $850-890 shipped to your door for a Honda, it's well worth the extra $$, and that's for the EU2000i!!! Do some searching on here for where to get one for this price.

Any generator with a Kohler or Yamaha engine is a good choice as well.

Ok back in January a lot of guys got the All-Power 2000 watt generator at Pep Boys for %200-$300 which was probably a pretty good bargain. A little noisier and more fuel consumptive than the Honda but you cant argue with the savings. I havent seen the cheap All-Power since then but now I see Northern Tool has the 2000 in stock for $312. The 1000 is no bargain but the 2000 which isnt sold in California because its either high polluting or it very defective would be tempting. Both generators are noisier and more fuel consumptive and I am guessing might only last 1000 hours or so. They are also slightly heavier than the Honda. The cheap generators fill a nich for occaisional boondockers who arent going to disturb neighbors and emergency use around the house. A mail order Honda 1000 for around $635 will actually be cheaper over its life than the cheap chinese generator plus you have parts availabilty and it will be quieter.
This one makes more sense if you go cheap

for 2 yr's now and it
works great it is a
honda knock off the motor
looks just like one 300 bucks
it's a killer deal use the $
you save on gas and go camping

The All Power uses more fuel and has a square wave inverter. Whereas, the Honda has a true sine wave inverter. Other than that the All Power looks like an inexpensive clone of the Honda.
Go ahead a buy one and let us know how it works!

We had a similar discussion on a knock off genny a while back here.
I'm a huge proponent of doing what you can with what you've got. The genny mentioned in the thread I'm referring to was a 3.5KW for something like $200 if I recall. That was a deal. Can fire a roof air, or anything else you want.
But the one you're talking about isn't much less than a Honda. $439 for a knock off is A LOT. I personally think it's overpriced.
The comparison on the previous thread was a $200 knock off vs. a $1000 Honda. In this case, it's a $439 knock off against a $600 Honda. I really would go for the Honda, if for nothing else, proven reliability.

I run my Honda on regular (87 octane) with no problem. I do not recall my manual saying it required 89 octane. I'll have to look at the manual again.
