How many people do their first oil change earlier then usual to get of the "break in" oil? I know it is regular oil in there (5W30), but should it be changed out at 1000 km's as opposed to say 5000 km's, and then after this change, carry on with regular 5000 kn changes?
Thanks.

IMO change it early, hopefully to rid engine of any shavings or dirt left during assembly.

I did in the past but not any more. I would stick to the book to preserve the warranty and then extend the intervals a bit.

I change the oil at 500 miles for the first oil change. The Provincial govt. which buys and maintains all vehicles used by municipalities and the province (lots of vehicles) makes it a policy to make the first oil change at 500 miles.
I've done it for years, always use Quaker State and I've had no internal engine problems ever.

I usually change the engine oil after about 1000 miles. I also change the rear differential fluid after 500-1000 miles of towing.

I do the same for the engine, but wait to around 5,000 or so for the rear to get rid of the rear gear wear pattern/break in particles out of there.

I might be a little "old school" but I changed engine oil, transmission oil, front and rear differential oil after about 1000 miles and a easy tow.
Also all filters as well.

Same here...there is no such thing as "break in" oil. I'd extend the intervals, too...do what the manual says.

My Cummins has the first change scheduled for 20,000 miles or one year and that's when I'll do it. Both should occur at about the same time as we USE the rig. We're over 7,000 now and have had it since February.

The people who designed and built your vehicle know it best. You should do EXACTLY what your owner's manual says to do.
