Realize that the more joules the better protection, but how much suppression do I actually need? Would a 500+ joule unit work for me? Are the 1000+ units pretty much for MH units? We don't travel in summer, so don't use A/C. About the only thing that would be affected are telly, fridge, water heater and outlets, I guess.

One post should be sufficient... 3 is an overkill

Was that me? I only see one. Website was acting up when I posted...sorry.

See what you mean now...hopefully moderator will fix this. I started three threads, not just posts. Wow, three threads, still no answer.

I'm a member of the "more is better" club, so I'd be the last person to try to guess the minimum surge requirements. I can tell you that I installed a PD EMS-HW30C and love the bugger. An all-in-one solution IMO.

My particular install DOES leave the ATS to fend for itself, as I have installed it after the ATS to keep an eye on both shore and gen power.

I agree 3 posts is overkill

How many joules do you need.. Surge plus 1 of course.

And since there are many different things that can affect the size of the surge there is no way to predict how big it will be.

Thus. "The more you got the better" is what applies.

NOTE that MOV's loose effectiveness over time.. Thus 100,000 now might be 90,000 in a couple of years and even 50,000 after that. If you need 40K you'd still be good

And the bigger the "Hit" (Expressed as a percentage of the capacity of the MOV's) the faster they fade.

I think this is a question you may have to answer yourself. Spending $350 to protect a $100 telly, $100 circuit board in WH and in fridge, plus whatever else you have plugged in-is it worth it to you? If not, get a smaller one. The other side of bigger is better is that eventually you may encounter a surge bigger than whatever you buy (a nearby lightning strike) in which case you lose all the equipment mentioned plus the surge protector. You pay your money and take your chances.
