Our RV tour company recommend getting a locking gas cap. For you folks who have traveled before in AK, should we get one?

When we went to AK gas was just $1.65 a gal and we didn't have one nor did we need one. With today's prices who knows, but, we went alone and didn't have the SECURITY of having all those others folks along with us to check on things. I would say no but I am trusting by nature and don't leave my RV where it would look normal to be siphoning gas out of the tank.

Every vehicle I have owned had a locking gas cap. For security of your fuel from theft or tampering (dumping water or sugar) avoiding costly repairs. I bought one for my wife's Mazda5, even tho it has a metal fuel door, and my F250 from Ebay. The newspaper had an article last week that several auto supply chains in the area had ran out of locking caps. But around here, the bad guys are punching holes in the plastic fuel tanks or cutting fuel lines to steal fuel! Some folks are arguing that locking the gas cap causes more damage when the thieves punch holes in your tank instead! But the reason that they use the hole punch technique is that they can lie inconspicuously under your SUV or truck while draining your tank without being observed standing next to your fuel filler cap.  So it really doesn't matter! Bad guys will be bad guys.

With all the gas and diesel stealing going on, a locking cap may deter them, but it may not. Some are poking holes in the tank and letting the product drain into a pan. Some cut the hose from the filler to the tank.
Do we have one? No. If they want some gas, take it. I'd rather lose some gas than replace a tank.
And I think people are more interested in stealing your gas/diesel than "putting something IN your tank" 
Guaranteed they won't get any at our house though.

We haven't had anyone try to steal our gas or diesel anywhere in town here in Anchorage. We don't have locks on any of our vehicles. It is your personal preference and if it gives you piece of mind, then do it.
We do put our gas can and generator in a locking compartment when we are not in our campsite but feel that is just common sense.

we have a locking door cover where our fuel goes it would be easy enought to break it if they wanted to but no one has yet none of the locking doors are marked fuel so they would have to find the right one to get it.

There's an idea, mark "sewer" on your RV's fuel door.
Lately, thieves have been drilling holes in fuel tanks to drain them.

Rather than mark "sewer" on the filler door, mark "PROPANE" and they should lave it alone. Make a phony propane filler on the gas cap in case they look!

I put one on my truck recently. The price of the locking cap would bare buy 3 gallons of diesel. $4.99 to $5.09 a galoon here. Ron Day

I was reading a thread this weekend that advised against a locking gas cap because as already stated here thieves are drilling holes into the gas tank. It is cheaper to buy more gas than to have to buy more gas and fix the gas tank. Who knows what is best?
