Looking at traveling along this stretch July 8.Out of Scranton I want to pick up I84 east. I've heard of a lot of construction delays on 81. Any local knowledge of that ?

Also would 81 out of Harrisburg to 78-476 to Scranton be a good alternative. I could also take 81-78-476-80-380 to 84 as an alternative.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this routing.

Thanks,
Bill

I have taken that route many times and it is good. I can't speak for the construction at this time. I can tell you if you go as far as Port Jervis, Milford, Montague area there is a WM Super Store, Milford PA 18337
(570) 491-4940, that allows overnite parking and Fuel is less expensive in Montague NJ just South of the Hwy. a few miles East of the WM.

I just drove that up 81 to NY from Virginia twice in the past two weeks.
The worst construction zone on 81 is north of 84/380. They are repaving a stretch around Frackville as well, one trip I had no traffic, the next I did (both were trips on a Friday afternoon) so you're at the mercy of how much traffic is on the road.

Don't bother with using 78 etc to get to 84, you'll just end up with more miles driven to get you to the same place. If you want to go via 78, just got into NJ to 287 up to 87 and then up to Newburg and pick up 84, which is the shortest route (but can also have the most traffic at most times of the day or week).

I hate 84 in PA. With 95 psi i the fronts I think it might be the roughest 54 miles of Interstate in the USA. I do 81 - 78 - 22 - 33 - 80 - 209 - 84 in NY. I do this just to avoid 84 in PA our house is only 5 miles from exit 2 in NY.
..... and Cabela's in on 78.

I like this route the best but there is a part in NJ on 78 that is pretty rough Chuck

Lots of good information. I've got the map out now and I'll settle on a route.
The link to DOT proved helpful and it looks like most projects in the area ended by the end of June.

Ed C., is 209 a good route to pull a trailer through? Looks like it may be a good break from the interstate and brings me right to Middletown which is where we're stopping for the night.

Thanks again to everyone.

I just came over 84 and down 81 last Sunday.

84 East bound is down to one lane for about 10 miles starting west of Milford. Several bridges being repaired. No construction to speak of on 81 from 84 to 80.

Bill I have taken 209 several times from 84 all the way to Kingston It is a good road. At this time of year it will be slooow with many tourists. Before fuel was so high it was my preference, but now slowdowns and stops make it more costly. I used to go that route on my way to Montreal as it is shorter distance and a nice break from the Interstate.
