I'm curious, what's the shortest for a ferry crossing to Vancouver Island from the U.S. Are motorhomes allowed with a tow vehicle, and about how long does the crossing take. Any good RV parks near Victoria?? Thanks

Not sure the way you will be coming. If you are thinking about
comeing up to port angeles the ferry gos direct to victoria
from Port Angeles. I believe it leaves PA. 3 times a day. It
takes all lengths of trucks and trailers. The best way to get to
PA. is to turn off I5 as you get close to Tacoma. Take #16 HYW
cross yhe toll bridge past Bremerton on #3 on to 104 cross the
bridge to then on to 101 to PA.Alot of this road is 4 lane HYway.
When you dock in Victoria you are right in downtown VICTORIA.
The other way is to cross the boarder in to canada then 99 to 17
to the ferry dock at Tsawwassen, This BC Ferries. They go every
hour but dock about 17 miles from Victoria. They to take all lengths.
All about the same price. the web site www.bcferries.com
The web site for the PA ferry is www.ferrytovictoria.com.
Hope this helps

What donach said.

I have my favorite CG on the island. If you are gonna take your toad it is perfect IMO. The folks who run it are fantastic.

Supercub:

As a resident of Anacortes, I wouldn't recommend going through here to Victoria. There are only two sailings a day in the summer and they get overbooked. You can reserve a place, for $15 extra (not taken off your fare!).

The ferry from Tsawassen BC is by far the best deal. The ships have good facilities (restaurants, etc), which the Washington State boats don't, and they have sailings about every 60 to 90 minutes. The Gulf Islands scenery is as good as the San Juans. The drive to Port Angeles from I-5 is a PITA unless you specifically want to visit the Olympic Peninsula while you're in Washington.

I'm assuming your "handle" has to do with Piper products. Have you flown a "King Cub"? The Boeing Employees' Soaring Association has the STC for that beast. It puts an extended main gear on a float-plane fuselage, then adds (I think) an O-520 engine and a 9' climb prop. With a Blanik sailplane on the string with two occupants, plus a passenger in the Cub, it can make 2500 fpm out of an airport with a 1400' field elevation and an ambient temperature in the high 90's!

It's a real blast to fly by itself! If you're passing through Ephrata, WA between Easter and Labor Day, the club operates out of the municipal airport there. I haven't flown with them for a while, but I'm sure N7474D is still doing its thing.

Just completed the trip 3 weeks ago. After a lot of research and help from B.C.ers' on this net, I determined it was easier to leave from Port Angeles than Vancouver. Why
1. time or boat was only 95 minutes.
2. 3 sailings a day allowing us to stay in a park the night before and taking the mid day sail.
3. cheaper and as noted in another response you leave (and catch)the ferry in downtown. The other ferry would require a 1-2 hour drive to Victoria.
4. by the time you pay for the TOAD to the island, hotel reservations and food you will be about the same as taking the whole rig over for 3 nights. You will only have 1/2 day on the traveling days.
IMPORTANT, which ever way you go, make your reservations on line NOW. When we showed up to depart Vancouver, the staff said "I hope you have reservations". Without them we would not have made our planned departure.

Ferry we used was the CoHo "Blackball" they are on-line and you can compute your costs and make reservations on line.

More good info from Jim1eddoc.

I forgot that we have also stayed at Westbay Marine too. It was real handy for downtown adventures & spectacular views of downtown and the harbor.

Crossing from US to Victoria I am not sure about. Vancouver to Victoria is not too bad for price but it is not about the same for all lengths. BC Ferries charges by the foot. You can save some money by travelling what they call mid week (Tues to Thurs). You can book a space on a particular ferry if you want but it is extra otherwise it is first come, first served. Last spring when we went across out 30' mh was just over $100 though we had to wait almost 3 hrs for the next ferry. Not much to do so fired up the computer and watched NCIS for a while....
