Just bought our 1st RV, a 2003 Georgetown, seems to be in great shape but we're wondering if it's worthwhile to purchase a Continued Service Plan from one of the camping clubs, any advice any this would be most welcome.

Betty on average they are great profit centers for the seller of the plans if that tells you anything on average.

Some people just want a plan but every time I was covered under any plan only the non covered items broke.

Is is kind of like the lottery there is more press about the winners than the lossers.

My service plan just ended and I never used it. They made money on me. I got talked into it when the salesman asked me if I wanted to have to pay for a refridgerator if it went bad. Live and learn.

If you are the least bit handy you can fix most of the things yourself. As stated above, the major beneficiaries of a service plan are the people who sell the plan.

Before you choose if you want such a product, I strongly suggest that you read this article from Escapees Magazine. It discusses exactly what such contracts are and how to choose if you should buy one.

Keep in mind that they are not really warranties or service contracts, but they are actually a health insurance plan for the RV. Like all insurance policies, only those who have more problems than average will save money with the purchase of one because the premiums of the ones with no claims are what pays for the repairs on those who have very high priced claims. Do not buy one expecting to it to save you money as that will only happen if you have major problems. If you do buy it, do so to protect you from a major repair expense in the event of a catastrophic failure.

I agree with everything that has been said but I would like to add that if you or your spouse are not at all handy with fixing things, it might be worth the piece of mind to do a service contract. I found one with zero deductible for five years. My DH doesn't have available time for handywork and his daddy wasn't much of a teacher in this arena. If something is messed up we will be paying a mechanic. I hope I never use it but it is so worth my piece of mind for less than $7.00 a month. Find out how long the company has been around. You want a reputable company...don't trust anything you cannot research. I wish you the very best. Please don't forget to pray about your decision...so much more important than any info i could offer you.

And if that's the case. never used even for a tire change, you can sometimes get that contract price back into your pocket. Read up on your paperwork or call them to check this.

I would like to know more about your Service Plan. I am in the process of buying a used trailer, and I am NOT handy at all.

Thanks

Folks the fear of the unknown is the reason we buy health insurance for us and our toys. In the case of RV's sometimes redeeming it can require as much energy as it would take to find a good shop that addresses RV issues in a professional manner locally. If you are on the road everything is a wild card.
