Been in So. Arizona for three years now but have left for traveling in cooler states every summer. This year, want to explore closer to home so need some advice. Thought we would head up to the North Rim of the Canyon and can boondock but worried about pulling 36' 5er. Any ideas or suggestions for sites? Thanks all. Mike

I don't recall the road into the North Rim as being that difficult. Just some mild ups and downs. Have you tried Chiricahua National Monument? We enjoyed our time there and it was fairly cool. I think the Apache used it as summer quarters.

Hi,
The meadows in the North Rim are great! You might even want to go home and bring back your horse! You can camp for free at the North Rim where it is very plesant, not to hot most of the time, but then you can take a drive and do some sightseeing with the A/C on in the car.
You can camp for free in the forest north of the Grand Canyon. Within the National park, there is only one campground for the public, (more spaces for staff) at the North Rim, and several campgrounds at the south rim. They should put in more campgrounds on the north side, reservations are a must there, but the forest is free and no time limits.
If you want to be really close to Phoenix, then consider the area around Jerome. It is also around 5,500 feet elevation. But because of the recent fires, some of the area might be closed.

I pulled a 35 foot 5th wheel to the north rim some years ago.no problem at all with the roads. The road to Jacob lake is steeper coming up 89A than it is to the rim from Jacob lake.

The drive up 89 and than 89A past Navaho bridges and across the desert valley is beautiful and flat. Good stop at the twin bridges for grand views & buy neat stuff from Indian women. You do have a fairly decent climb up outa the valley to get atop the plateau. On top is thick pine forest and the drive south to the canyon is flat and beautiful. Watch out for deer and an occasional bear.
If you have a few hours to spare, a 25 mile side trip up Rt 89 to the Glen Canyon dam(Lake Powell)and bridge at Page is truely amazing site. There is also a GREAT camp resort called Wahweep just north of the dam on Lake view drive. Cost about $30 a nite.
